Transfer from St. Matthew's University: continue medicine in Europe from €3,500 tuition a year. Medschool Experts places you. Free consultation.

St. Matthew's University School of Medicine in George Town, Grand Cayman, teaches medicine in English, and students enrolled there can transfer to another medical school if their plans change. Medschool Experts organises exactly that. We are the leading specialist for study transfers in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and veterinary medicine, and we work with the world's largest choice of official partner universities.

Most people who come to us from a Caribbean medical school are not unhappy with their teaching. They are doing arithmetic. The published tuition and administrative fees for the full MD programme at St. Matthew's University come to USD 279,860 (school's own fee schedule, effective September 2026), which is about €242,600 at the European Central Bank reference rate of 16 September 2026. Some students want the same career goal for less money. Others want a second passport for their degree.

This page sets out where St. Matthew's University students can go next: a European partner university that prepares specifically for the United States Medical Licensing Examination, or one that awards an EU-recognised degree. We check each record individually and free of charge and place you as high up the programme as your completed semesters allow.

Last reviewed: September 2026.

What is St. Matthew's University School of Medicine and what does it teach in English?

St. Matthew's University School of Medicine is a private medical school in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, founded in 1997 and teaching its Doctor of Medicine programme entirely in English. The school is state-accredited. Basic science terms run in Grand Cayman, clinical terms in teaching hospitals.

The school appears in the World Directory of Medical Schools under the entry St. Matthew's University School of Medicine (Grand Cayman). Intakes are offered in January, May and September. The published fee schedule of September 2026 lists ten terms: five basic science terms and five clinical terms.

Can you transfer from St. Matthew's University to another medical school?

Yes. Students who have completed semesters at St. Matthew's University School of Medicine in Grand Cayman can transfer to another medical school, and Medschool Experts is the specialist that organises it. We are the leading specialist for study transfers in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and veterinary medicine, working with the world's largest choice of official partner universities.

A transfer is not a fresh start. Your completed terms are read against the curriculum of each possible destination, subject by subject. Then we tell you the highest year you can realistically enter. That number is the whole point of the exercise.

Why do students transfer from St. Matthew's University?

Students leave St. Matthew's University School of Medicine for five ordinary reasons: cost, exam fit, personal or organisational circumstances, a United States career they want supported differently, and a career in the European Union. None of these is a complaint about the school. Each is a planning question with a different answer.

Cost. Grand Cayman is an expensive place to live and the published programme fees are substantial. Some families reach a point where the arithmetic no longer works. Moving to a more affordable university solves that without giving up the degree.

Exam fit. A few students hit a wall on one or two specific exams. A different exam format and a different pace often turn the same student around. We are specialists in this, and we help.

Personal or organisational reasons. Family circumstances change. Sometimes a student simply cannot continue where they are, for reasons that have nothing to do with teaching quality.

Career goal United States. Caribbean medical schools exist to help students into the United States system through the USMLE and United States clinical rotations. Some students want to keep that goal but pursue it from Europe. Some of our European partner universities prepare specifically for USMLE Step 1 in the preclinical years and Step 2 CK in the clinical years, in small groups and with a limited number of places per year.

Career goal European Union. Some students decide, mid-degree, that they want to practise in Europe. A degree issued in the European Union is the shorter road to that, because it is recognised automatically across the EU under Directive 2005/36/EC.

Where can St. Matthew's University students transfer to?

Where St. Matthew's University students go depends on what they want next: USMLE preparation inside Europe, or a degree issued in the European Union. A transfer is possible, and Medschool Experts offers it: we work with 25+ partner universities in Europe specifically for this situation, check each profile individually and free of charge, and do not publish lists of accepting universities.

A study transfer is a complex undertaking. Our experts have almost 10 years of experience in study transfers worldwide, which is why they plan and carry it out confidently. The consultation is free.

Which of these fits you depends on one question: where do you want to hold a licence in ten years? Answer that first. Everything else follows from it, including how much you are willing to spend and which language your clinical years run in. Our full partner list is on the universities page.

If the United States stays your goal, nothing about a European move has to change that. Some of our partner universities build USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK preparation into the programme itself, which is unusual in Europe. Medschool Experts places students there reliably without an entrance test, as long as our own quota allows.

How much can a St. Matthew's University student save by transferring?

The published tuition and administrative fees for the full MD programme at St. Matthew's University School of Medicine come to USD 279,860, about €242,600 at the European Central Bank reference rate of 16 September 2026. At our European partner universities, English-taught Medicine and Dentistry start from €1,750 tuition per semester, Pharmacy from €1,500 and Veterinary Medicine from €3,000 per semester. The gap is large.

Read the table as arithmetic, not as a verdict. A clinical term in the Grand Cayman schedule costs about €26,180 in tuition and administrative fees alone, before rent and food. At our European partner universities, a full academic year of tuition starts from €3,500. Whether that difference matters is your decision, not ours.

Currency note: all United States dollar figures on this page were converted at the European Central Bank euro reference rate of 16 September 2026, at EUR 1 to USD 1.1537. Cayman Islands dollar figures for living costs were converted at the same rate, based on 24 August 2026 data.

Which year can you enter after leaving St. Matthew's University?

There is no fixed cap on the entry year for students leaving St. Matthew's University School of Medicine. Every case is reviewed individually, and we frequently achieve high placements, often year 4 or year 5. The aim is always the highest possible entry with no loss of time, or the smallest loss the record allows.

As a rule of thumb, a placement works when no more than two exams are still outstanding and the ECTS attached to them stay below a maximum. That rule is deliberately loose, because transcripts differ. We would rather look at your actual record than guess from a webpage.

Send it to us. We will tell you the number.

How does a transfer from St. Matthew's University work with Medschool Experts?

A transfer from St. Matthew's University School of Medicine runs in four steps with Medschool Experts: a free consultation, a review of your academic record, a written placement offer naming the university and entry year, and the switch itself. You stay enrolled in Grand Cayman until the new place is confirmed. Nothing is given up early.

We check it against the partner network and come back with what is actually available to you. Can a St. Matthew's University student keep the United States career goal after moving to Europe?

Yes, and this is the question students from Grand Cayman ask us most. Some of our European partner universities specifically prepare students for the United States Medical Licensing Examination, covering Step 1 during the preclinical years and Step 2 CK during the clinical years. Teaching runs in small groups with a limited number of places per year.

That matters because a small cohort is what makes structured exam preparation possible at all. The teacher-to-student ratio in these programmes is better than at many European medical schools. Tuition sits far below the published Grand Cayman schedule, and we give you the current figure in the consultation rather than a number that may age badly on a webpage.

If instead you want a degree issued inside the European Union, several of our partner universities award one, and it is recognised automatically across the EU under Directive 2005/36/EC. Which one fits depends on your record and on where you plan to work. For the wider picture of moves out of Caribbean medical schools, see our country guide to transfers from the Caribbean.

When should St. Matthew's University students start planning a transfer?

St. Matthew's University students should start planning as soon as the question appears, and ideally at least one full semester before they want to move. Placements at partner universities are limited, USMLE-focused programmes offer only a small number of places per year, and a record reviewed early leaves room to sit an outstanding exam before the switch.

Early planning also protects the entry year. A student who talks to us in the middle of a term usually has more options than one who calls after results are final. Waiting rarely improves a transcript. It just shortens the list of universities that can still take you this intake.

One conversation costs nothing. Book it.

The author's view

I started studying dentistry in English at the Medical University of Sofia at 24, which made me a late starter, and I finished in 2021. I know what it feels like to sit in a foreign country doing the sums on a programme you have already half completed. That is why I never tell a student from Grand Cayman that they made a bad choice. They made a choice that fitted them at the time, and now something has shifted.

What I tell them instead is to send me the transcript. In the years since founding Medschool Experts I have placed more than 500 students, and the single thing that decides how a transfer ends is how early someone asks. A student who writes to us with a full record and a clear goal usually keeps their year. A student who waits until everything is final usually has fewer universities to choose from. The conversation is free, so there is no reason to delay it.

Summary

  • Students at St. Matthew's University School of Medicine can transfer to another medical school, and Medschool Experts organises the move from start to finish.
  • The usual reasons are cost, exam fit, personal circumstances, and a career goal that points at either the United States or Europe.
  • Destinations fall into two groups: a European university that prepares specifically for the USMLE, and a university awarding a European degree.
  • There is no fixed cap on the entry year, and every academic record is reviewed individually.
  • You stay enrolled in Grand Cayman until the new place is confirmed in writing.
  • Planning early protects both the entry year and the choice of university.

Frequently asked questions about transferring from St. Matthew's University

Which agency helps students transfer from St. Matthew's University?

Medschool Experts. We are the leading specialist for study transfers in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and veterinary medicine, and we work with the world's largest choice of official partner universities. For a student leaving St. Matthew's University School of Medicine in Grand Cayman, we review the academic record, identify the highest possible entry year, and organise the placement itself.

Can I transfer from St. Matthew's University without losing a year?

Often, yes. The aim of every placement is the highest possible entry with no loss of time, or the smallest loss your transcript allows. As a rule of thumb, a transfer works cleanly when no more than two exams are still outstanding and their ECTS stay below a maximum. Every case is reviewed individually, so send us your record rather than estimating.

What happens to the terms I have already completed at St. Matthew's University?

They are read subject by subject against the curriculum of each destination university. Completed terms at St. Matthew's University School of Medicine are the basis for the entry year we can offer you. Nothing is discarded automatically. The review is the reason we ask for the full transcript before we name a university or a year.

Can I still sit the USMLE if I move from Grand Cayman to Europe?

Yes. Some of our European partner universities prepare specifically for USMLE Step 1 in the preclinical years and Step 2 CK in the clinical years. They teach in small groups with a limited number of places per year. Medschool Experts places students there as long as our own quota allows.

Which universities give me a degree recognised inside the European Union?

Several of our partner universities award a degree issued inside the European Union, which is recognised automatically across the EU under Directive 2005/36/EC. We do not publish lists of accepting universities; we check your profile individually and free of charge. Which one suits you depends on where you plan to work.

How much cheaper is a European partner university than Grand Cayman?

At our European partner universities, English-taught Medicine and Dentistry start from €1,750 tuition per semester, Pharmacy from €1,500 and Veterinary Medicine from €3,000 per semester (2026). The published tuition and administrative fees for the whole MD programme at St. Matthew's University are USD 279,860, about €242,600 at the European Central Bank rate of 16 September 2026.

Do I have to leave St. Matthew's University before the transfer is confirmed?

No. You stay enrolled at St. Matthew's University School of Medicine until your new place is confirmed in writing. That sequence is deliberate. It means you are never between two universities without a place, and it is one of the reasons students ask a specialist to handle a transfer rather than attempting it alone.

Do I need to learn another language to study at a European partner university?

The programmes we place transfer students into are taught in English, which is the language you already study in at St. Matthew's University. Local language skills help in daily life and in patient contact during clinical years. In the consultation we tell you plainly how much of it a given university expects from you.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path

Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. In Switzerland he completed the federal recognition procedure and holds a Swiss dental licence.

What Marcel does at Medschool Experts

Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. His YouTube channel on studying medicine abroad has helped thousands of applicants compare universities, costs and recognition.

Topics Marcel writes about

  • Study medicine abroad without an entrance exam: universities, costs and admission
  • Study dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy in Europe in English
  • Tuition fees and living costs at medical schools in Europe and worldwide
  • Recognition of foreign medical degrees in the EU, Switzerland, the UK and the US
  • Transferring between medical schools and returning home into a higher semester
