Study Medicine or Dentistry in Hradec Králové, Czech Republic

The Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Hradec Králové offers Medicine and Dentistry taught in English. Of its roughly 1,500 students, around 350 are international. The English-taught Medicine programme admits about 105 students each year. The affiliated University Hospital comprises 37 clinics and around 1,400 beds. High-performing students can complete clinical placements in the United States or the United Kingdom.

• Medicine: The Medicine programme leads to a medical degree. The pre-clinical phase establishes the scientific foundations; the clinical phase adds patient-facing work.
• Dentistry: Dentistry is practical from the outset: phantom courses in the pre-clinical phase, then supervised patient treatment.

Medicine takes six years, Dentistry five. In years one and two you complete the pre-clinical phase with anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology and embryology. From the third year, the clinical phase follows with internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, gynaecology, neurology and psychiatry; practical training takes place at the University Hospital with 37 clinics and around 1,400 beds. The final year is practical and works like a full clinical internship year. High-performing students can complete placements in the United States or the United Kingdom.

The tuition fee is Medicine 8,150 EUR per semester, Dentistry 8,400 EUR per semester. Before making any decision, ask the International Office to confirm the amount in writing, specifying whether accommodation, insurance, and registration fees are included.

The Czech Republic is an EU member state, and the Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové is part of Charles University. Under the Professional Qualifications Directive 2005/36/EC, your degree is therefore recognised automatically throughout the EU/EEA and in Switzerland — without an equivalence assessment or knowledge test. This applies to the six-year Medicine programme as well as the five-year Dentistry programme.

You apply for your licence to practise with the competent authority of the country where you want to work. Because teaching in Hradec Králové is in English, most countries ask for proof of medical-level proficiency in their national language. Processing times vary from country to country.

After that, specialist training is open to you on the same terms as graduates of domestic medical schools. Hradec Králové is itself a university hospital location, so your practical training takes place where you study — and starting your career in the Czech Republic or any other EU country remains an option.

Hradec Králové is less than 150 kilometres from Prague; by car or train you reach the capital and Václav Havel Airport (PRG) in about one and a half to two hours. From there, numerous daily flights connect you with cities across Europe and beyond.

The climate is temperate: July averages close to 20 °C, and winters stay just below freezing — comparatively mild for Central Europe.

Thanks to its spacious parks and the coherent functionalist architecture of the 1920s and 1930s, partly designed by Josef Gočár, the city is nicknamed the “Salon of the Republic”. Cafés, the Elbe riverbank and an active student life around the Faculty of Medicine shape everyday life, and the Krkonoše mountains are within easy reach for trips into nature.
