The Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen is one of the five medical faculties of Charles University and has been teaching international students in English for decades. Clinical teaching takes place at the affiliated University Hospital Pilsen.

Dean and professors

Since February 2026, Prof. MUDr. Milan Štengl, Ph.D., has led the faculty as Dean, elected by the Academic Senate in October 2025. A physiologist specialising in cardiac physiology and himself a graduate of the Pilsen faculty, he headed the Institute of Physiology from 2013 and was previously Vice-Dean for Science, Research and Grants – with research stays in Leuven, Utrecht and Maastricht and more than 50 scientific publications.

• Prof. MUDr. Jindřich Fínek, Ph.D., MHA – oncologist, served two terms as Dean of the faculty and has headed the Department of Oncology and Radiotherapy of the faculty and University Hospital Pilsen since 2014.
• Prof. MUDr. Jiří Ferda, Ph.D. – radiologist, head of the Department of Imaging Methods with around 60 physicians and more than 400,000 examinations a year, awarded the City of Pilsen Prize for his contributions to modern medicine.
• Prof. MUDr. Martin Matějovič, Ph.D. – internist and intensive care specialist, head of the 1st Department of Internal Medicine of the faculty and University Hospital Pilsen and Vice-Dean for clinical education in the General Medicine programme.

Accreditations of the Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen (Charles University) in the Czech Republic

Is the Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen a state-accredited university? Yes. It is one of five medical faculties of Charles University (Univerzita Karlova), the oldest and largest state university of the Czech Republic, and is accredited by the National Accreditation Bureau for Higher Education (Národní akreditační úřad pro vysoké školství, NAÚ).

The Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, the internationally recognised directory of medical schools maintained by WFME and FAIMER. The NAÚ itself is recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) as an accrediting agency (WFME recognition valid until January 2035) — the basis for ECFMG's "Recognized Accreditation Policy," under which only graduates of programmes accredited by a WFME-recognised agency are eligible for ECFMG certification and, with it, admission to the USMLE.

The Czech Republic is also on the list of the US National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (NCFMEA), which identifies countries whose medical-education accreditation standards are comparable to those of the United States.

• Medicine: The Medicine programme leads to a medical degree. The pre-clinical phase establishes the scientific foundations; the clinical phase adds patient-facing work.
• Dentistry: Dentistry is practical from the outset: phantom courses in the pre-clinical phase, then supervised patient treatment.

The programme lasts six years. The first two years cover anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology and embryology as well as Czech language courses. From year three, the clinical phase follows with internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, gynaecology, neurology and psychiatry at University Hospital Pilsen. The sixth year consists of ward rotations and works like a final clinical year.

The tuition fee is 8,064 EUR per semester (medicine and dentistry). Before making any decision, ask the International Office to confirm the amount in writing, specifying whether accommodation, insurance, and registration fees are included.

The Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen belongs to Charles University and is located in the Czech Republic, and therefore in the European Union. Directive 2005/36/EC applies, so your degree is automatically recognised throughout the EU/EEA and in Switzerland. Neither an equivalence assessment nor an additional examination is required – for the medical title MUDr. after six years as well as for the dental title MDDr. after five years.

Your licence to practise is issued by the competent authority of the country where you want to work. Most authorities require proof of language skills at a professional level, which after an English-taught programme is the key step of the process. Processing times depend on the country.

With your licence in hand, you apply for specialist training posts on the same terms as graduates of domestic medical schools, and Medschool Experts remains available until then. Most people think of beer when they hear Pilsen, but the city has plenty to offer climate-wise too. With an average annual temperature of 9.3 °C and a pleasant 19.3 °C in July, the warmest month, you enjoy four moderate seasons in the heart of Bohemia.

Pilsen has no major international airport of its own, but Prague is practically next door. Václav Havel Airport (PRG) is about 93 km away – around 50 minutes by car or about an hour and a half by train.

From Prague there are direct flights to a wide range of European cities, so a trip home rarely needs more than one connection. Pilsen itself offers a compact, safe city centre and rents noticeably lower than in most Western European university cities.
