ERAS for IMGs: Your US Residency Application
ERAS is where six years of medical school abroad turn into one application. What goes into it, when it opens and how IMGs make programs actually read theirs.
ERAS, the Electronic Residency Application Service, is the one portal almost every US residency program uses. You build your application once, pick your programs and ERAS sends everything out. For graduates of US schools, the dean's office handles part of it. As an IMG, ECFMG takes over that role: you get your ERAS access through ECFMG, and ECFMG transmits your documents.
What goes into your ERAS application
USMLE transcript
Your Step 1 result and your Step 2 CK score. If Step 2 CK is not on there by September, many programs will not look further. Take it early.
MSPE (the dean's letter)
A summary of your performance in medical school, written by your university. European schools are not always used to writing one, so ask early and give them a clear template.
Letters of recommendation
Usually three to four. The ones that carry weight come from US physicians who saw you work, which is why US clinical rotations matter.
Personal statement
One page on why this specialty and why you. Studying abroad is a story worth telling: you chose a harder, more international path. Say so plainly, without clichés.
Experiences and program signals
You list your clinical, research and volunteer work, pick a few meaningful experiences to highlight and, in many specialties, send preference signals to the programs you care about most. Use them wisely: a signal tells a program you are serious.
The ERAS calendar
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Spring before your final year | Request letters, draft personal statement, ask your school about the MSPE |
| June | Get your ERAS token from ECFMG, start filling out the application |
| September | Applications go to programs; submit on day one |
| October to January | Interviews |
| February to March | Rank list, then Match Day |
The one habit that helps most: apply on the first day programs can see applications. Programs read in waves, and the first wave gets the most attention.
FAQ: ERAS for IMGs
How do IMGs get access to ERAS?
Through ECFMG. ECFMG issues your ERAS token and acts as your dean's office for document transmission.
How many programs should an IMG apply to?
More than a US graduate would. Focus on programs with a track record of taking IMGs and match your list to your Step 2 CK score.
Do I need to be ECFMG certified to apply through ERAS?
No. You can apply while certification is in progress. You need the certificate before residency starts.
