Medical Schools Abroad for US Students
The USMLE-eligible medical schools abroad that US students choose most: English-taught MD programs in the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Bosnia and the Caribbean, compared by tuition, length, entry and the path back to a US residency.
Maybe you've done the math on a US medical degree and felt a little sick. You're not alone. Every year thousands of Americans skip that path and go to medical school abroad instead. In Europe you start right after high school, you don't need the MCAT, and you pay a fraction of the US price. There's really only one question you have to get right: does the school keep the door to a US residency open? The schools on this page do. Here's how to tell.
Four things decide whether a school abroad works for you as an American. It has to be listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools with an ECFMG note for US applicants. It needs accreditation from a WFME-recognized agency. The clinical years have to be taught in English. And the curriculum should get you ready for USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK. Miss one of these and your US plans get complicated fast.

Europe or the Caribbean: which route fits you?
European medical schools accept you directly after high school. You study six years and graduate with a full medical degree that is recognized in the EU and qualifies you for the USMLE. The Caribbean follows the US model: a bachelor's degree or pre-med first, then a four-year MD with the clinical years in US hospitals. Europe is usually cheaper in total and gives you a second career option in the EU; the Caribbean gives you more US clinical exposure. A detailed comparison is in our guide Caribbean vs European medical schools.
Admission requirements for US students
- High school diploma with biology and chemistry, ideally with AP or honors courses
- No MCAT for European schools; some schools run their own entrance test in biology and chemistry
- English proficiency, which native speakers prove with their diploma
- Valid US passport; the student visa or residence permit is arranged after admission
You don't have to figure this out alone. We look at your transcripts, tell you honestly where your chances are best and run the whole application for you, from the apostille on your documents to your student visa.
How much does medical school abroad cost?
Tuition in Europe ranges from about 8,000 € to 19,000 € per year. Living costs in Central and Eastern European university cities are about 600 € to 1,000 € per month. Over six years, a European MD usually costs less than a single US medical degree plus the undergraduate years before it. Several European medical schools participate in the US federal Direct Loan program; read more in federal student loans for foreign medical schools.
From medical school abroad to a US residency
You take USMLE Step 1 during your studies and Step 2 CK in the clinical years. Together with an English proficiency test this leads to ECFMG certification, which you need to apply for residency through ERAS and match through the NRMP. Clinical electives in US hospitals and US letters of recommendation make your application much stronger. The full timeline is explained in USMLE for international medical graduates and IMG residency match.
