Language: Georgia is easier, Russia is more demanding

In Georgia the full programme is in English and Georgian is taught as a support subject. In Russia the English track covers theory, but on the wards in the clinical years patients speak Russian. Students who take Russian seriously from year one manage well; students who ignore it struggle in years four to six.

Cost: Georgia is cheaper at comparable quality

Six years of tuition in Georgia cost about 39,000 € to 45,000 €. At Sechenov University in Moscow the tuition is 79,800 €. Russia also has cheaper regional universities, but we place Indian students at Sechenov because of its size, hospitals and reputation.

Clinical training and FMGE preparation

Russian state universities have very large hospitals and a high patient load. Georgian universities have smaller groups and more teaching in English at the bedside. For FMGE or NExT what counts most is your own preparation from year one, not the country. Read our FMGE guide.

NMC rules: both countries can work

Both countries can meet the NMC rules for MBBS abroad if the programme is in English, lasts at least 54 months and includes a 12-month internship at the same university with registration in the country. We check the exact programme before you apply, using our NMC compliance checklist.

Our recommendation

  • Choose Georgia if you want full English teaching, a mild climate, simpler travel and a lower total budget.
  • Choose Russia if you want a very large state university with its own hospitals and are ready to learn Russian properly.
  • Consider Europe if you want an EU degree with options in Europe as well as India.
