Studying Medicine in Frankfurt at EUC Campus: Costs, Recognition

Frankfurt at a Glance

This campus is a special case in our network. You study medicine in Germany, with German health insurance, a German tenancy agreement, and your family within reach — and still receive a Cypriot, and therefore European, degree at the end. For many students, exactly this combination solves the problem that studying abroad usually brings: relocating to another country is not required at all.

In terms of cost, Frankfurt sits at the upper end of what European medicine programmes charge. In return, you get an English-language programme with a clear recognition situation and a city that is reachable from anywhere in Germany within a few hours. University and Hospital

European University Cyprus is a private institution headquartered in Nicosia and runs, by its own account, three campuses: Nicosia, Athens and Frankfurt am Main. The School of Medicine offers the MD programme at all three sites; in Frankfurt the complete curriculum is taught on location. The campus is at Im Vogelsgesang 3, 60488 Frankfurt am Main.

Clinical training takes place, according to the university's programme description, at public and private hospitals; the university names Germany, Cyprus, Greece and the United States as partner regions, and for the Frankfurt programme specifically hospitals in Frankfurt itself. The Rhine-Main area is well suited to this: the density of secondary and tertiary care hospitals is high, and students who complete their clinical rotations here build contacts in exactly the places where they later want to begin their specialist training.

For future employability, accreditation is what counts. The responsible national body is the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education (CyQAA). It holds the World Federation for Medical Education Recognition Status for basic medical education, according to the WFME overview with validity until February 2030. This is not a formality: since 1 January 2023, the ECFMG has required that a medical school be accredited by a WFME-recognised agency for its graduates to be eligible for US certification.

To place the university in context: in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, European University Cyprus falls in the 801–1000 band, and in the subject ranking for Medicine, Dentistry and Health at 601+. In the QS Stars rating of 2024, the university carries five stars, including for teaching and for medicine. In my conversations I notice that families weight such indicators more heavily than they need to. For the Approbation in Germany a ranking is irrelevant; what matters is that the degree comes from an EU member state and the accreditation is solid. Both are the case here.

Which Programmes are Available and in Which Language?

At the Frankfurt campus, medicine is the core programme, alongside a number of health sciences programmes. Dentistry and veterinary medicine, according to studimed.de, are offered by European University Cyprus only in Nicosia, not in Frankfurt. The language of instruction is consistently English; a language certificate at B2 level is required, such as IELTS from 6.5 or TOEFL iBT from 79 points; applicants from English-speaking countries are exempt.

One point that distinguishes this campus from every other: lectures and examinations run in English, but at the bedside you speak German, because the clinical components take place in Germany. You have to be comfortable switching between the two. In return, there is no need to learn a foreign national language at all, and medical terminology is acquired in both languages anyway.

How Does the Admission Process Work?

European University Cyprus selects its own students, independently of the German university admissions foundation. The requirement is a general university entrance qualification; the university's admissions page specifies for German applicants an Abitur grade average of 2.3 or better, along with biology and at least one further science subject — chemistry, mathematics or physics. This is not a ranking threshold that shifts each year but a fixed minimum requirement. There is no numerus clausus in the German sense.

Selection takes place through two elements: a written test covering biology, chemistry and general knowledge, and a motivational interview. The content is secondary-school curriculum, not university-level specialist knowledge. The interview explores your motivations, your background and whether your expectations of the profession are realistic.

We organise registration, the application and the entrance test. The entire process is generally possible online, so you do not need to travel to the campus for the test. The programme starts in October; there is no winter semester entry. Students who sit their Abitur in early summer can begin in the same year, because the test and interview take place before then. Places at the Frankfurt campus are limited, so starting the process early is advisable.

What Does the Programme Cost?

Tuition is 12,500 EUR per semester. Over twelve semesters, that is 150,000 EUR in fees alone. There is also an application fee, which the university's admissions page lists at 200 EUR. All amounts are in euros, so there is no currency risk.

A comparison with the main campus is informative: for Medicine in Nicosia, studimed.de lists European University Cyprus at 11,500 EUR per semester (as of 1 November 2025). The Frankfurt campus is therefore around 1,000 EUR per semester higher. Students in Nicosia pay for flights and a second household abroad in return.

This allows a full six-year calculation. The following is my own estimate, not a figure from the university. For living costs I use the Numbeo values for Frankfurt am Main (as of 13 August 2026): 1,077 EUR per month excluding rent, and a one-bedroom flat outside the city centre at 1,017 EUR.

Rent is the lever where the biggest savings are possible. Students who live in a shared flat, in a commutable suburb, or in the family home in the Rhine-Main area can eliminate this item entirely or partially; without a private flat the total drops to around 235,000 EUR. This is exactly why this campus works out significantly cheaper for families already based in the region than for those moving in. As a comparison I have set the fees for several of our network campuses side by side below.

The table shows where Frankfurt stands: it is the most expensive campus in this list, and this is almost always a budget decision. Because the campus is in Germany, overseas BAföG does not apply here. Depending on the individual situation, options include student loans, education funds, scholarships and family resources; we assess together which state funding may be available. How Is the Programme Structured?

The programme runs for six years and covers 360 ECTS credits, 60 per academic year. The first two years focus on the pre-clinical section, covering anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology and embryology. From the third year, the clinical section begins with internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, gynaecology, neurology and psychiatry. The final year is entirely practical and corresponds to the German Practical Year.

Notable is the early entry into practice: clinical training begins in the first year of study, which is unusually early for a medicine programme. Teaching takes place in small, internationally composed groups. Your results are recorded in ECTS credits and documented in the Transcript of Records with subjects, grades and points, making them comparable across Europe. The university participates in the Erasmus+ programme, so a study period at a partner institution is in principle possible.

Where Are You Entitled to Work as a Doctor with This Degree?

The key point at this campus: you study in Frankfurt, but the diploma is issued by European University Cyprus, headquartered in Nicosia. Cyprus is a member state of the European Union, so Directive 2005/36/EC on the recognition of professional qualifications applies, in the version of Delegated Decision (EU) 2023/2383 of 23 May 2023, applicable since 9 October 2023. The medical profession is harmonised there in Annex V under number 5.1.1, and recognition is automatic.

For the German Approbation you submit your diploma, the transcript of subjects and grades, and proof of your German language skills. Because you have already lived in Germany and completed your clinical training here, the language certificate is almost always the least complicated part of the process. You then begin specialist training at hospitals and practices with authorised training status, on equal footing with graduates of German faculties. How long the authority takes depends on the federal state.

Dentist, Pharmacist, Psychologist, Vet: the Legal Position by Profession

Dentistry. European University Cyprus offers dentistry, according to studimed.de, at the Nicosia campus, not in Frankfurt. The route is the same principle as for medicine: the dentist profession is harmonised in Annex V of Directive 2005/36/EC under number 5.3.2, and a Cypriot diploma is automatically recognised in Germany.

Pharmacy. Pharmacy is not part of the Frankfurt programme. The profession is harmonised under EU law in Annex V under number 5.6.2, so a degree from an EU member state is automatically recognised for the Approbation as a pharmacist in Germany. Psychology. Here the situation is different, and this is frequently confused. Psychology and psychotherapy are not harmonised under Directive 2005/36/EC. There is therefore no automatic recognition, but rather a case-by-case review by the responsible state authority, which compares the curriculum with German requirements. Anyone aiming for the Approbation as a psychotherapist should clarify this point before choosing a programme.

Veterinary medicine. European University Cyprus offers veterinary medicine, according to studimed.de, also in Nicosia, not at the Frankfurt campus. The veterinary profession is harmonised in Annex V under number 5.4.2; a Cypriot diploma therefore leads to the veterinary Approbation in Germany without an equivalence examination.

Career Paths After Graduation

With the Approbation, the same pathways are open to you as to graduates of German faculties. The most common is specialist training at a hospital, in Germany lasting between five and six years depending on the speciality. You choose the discipline freely; there is no tie to the country of study.

The Frankfurt campus has a practical advantage here that I will not understate: you have completed your clinical training in Germany, you know ward life, documentation and the way the German healthcare system operates, and you have already built contacts in the Rhine-Main area with hospitals that offer specialist training. In applications for a junior doctor post, that counts for more than any ranking position.

Beyond that, pathways into research and academia, industry, public authorities and health services research remain open. The English-language instruction is a genuine advantage here, because the specialist literature, conferences and study protocols are in English in any case. A later move to Cyprus, Greece or other EU member states is also feasible, because the degree is European and the university participates in Erasmus+. Career Changers, Transfers and Returning to Germany

The Frankfurt campus attracts two groups in particular. One has the Abitur in hand and wants to start without a waiting period. The other has already studied — often biology, nursing or another science — and is switching into medicine. For applicants with a relevant bachelor's degree, entry directly into the first year of the programme is explicitly provided for on the university's admissions page. Students who need to establish the subject foundation first will also find a Foundation Programme in medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine at the Frankfurt campus.

A transfer to a state German university, however, is not automatic. Even though you are based in Frankfurt am Main, you are enrolled at a Cypriot institution. A transfer depends on the accreditation of your prior credits and the availability of places in higher semesters; only the receiving faculty decides. Plan your route so that it works even without a transfer.

Conversely, we regularly have students who have started abroad and want to complete the rest of their programme closer to home. Frankfurt is the obvious campus for this, because the programme takes place in Germany and the degree is still European. Living in Frankfurt: City, Getting Around, Costs

Frankfurt am Main has around 780,000 inhabitants, is the largest city in Hesse and an international transport and business hub. The airport and main railway station make the city easily reachable from anywhere in Germany and from across Europe; a weekend at home is rarely a logistical problem. The campus is in the northwest of the city and is served by the S-Bahn and U-Bahn networks.

On costs, honesty is required: Frankfurt is expensive. Numbeo puts monthly outgoings for a single person excluding rent at around 1,077 EUR (as of 13 August 2026). A one-bedroom flat in the city centre runs to around 1,207 EUR, outside the centre to around 1,017 EUR per month. The housing market is tight and rents are above the national average.

In my experience, finding accommodation is where this campus proves most challenging, which is why we start on it early. The typical solutions are shared flats, living in a commutable suburb, or the family home in the Rhine-Main area. Any of these reduces total costs significantly. Who This Campus Suits

The Frankfurt campus suits you if you want to study medicine without moving abroad and are willing to learn in English. It suits families already in the Rhine-Main area, for whom accommodation and daily life are already settled. And it suits anyone who needs their degree recognised without detours, because the Cypriot diploma is automatically valid across the entire European Union.

It does not suit you if your budget cannot support the tuition fees. 12,500 EUR per semester is a high figure, and over twelve semesters it accumulates to 150,000 EUR in fees alone, before living costs. Anyone who does not have reliable financing in place before the first semester should look at less expensive campuses in our network with the same recognition situation.

My assessment: Frankfurt is the campus for everyone who is attracted by the idea of studying abroad but cannot or does not want to relocate. You get the English-language programme, the small international groups and the European degree, without maintaining a second household in another country.
