Study Transfer from Uzbekistan: from Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and More to Europe
17.09.2026
The Major Merger of 2025: Three Institutions Became One
On 1 September 2025, the Tashkent Medical Academy, the Tashkent Pediatric Medical Institute, and the Tashkent State Dental Institute were merged by government decree into the new Tashkent State Medical University (TSMU). At the same time, the Urgench branch of the Tashkent Medical Academy was separated as an independent Urgench State Medical Institute.
This matters in practice: many international placement portals still list the three former names. If your enrolment certificate still names one of the dissolved institutions, this is not a problem — we resolve the legal succession in the recognition process. The official domains of the new university are tashmeduni.uz and tsmu.co.uz.

What Studying in Uzbekistan Costs
Tuition fees range from approximately 2,500 to 4,500 US dollars per academic year, equivalent to around 2,300 to 4,100 euros. This makes Uzbekistan one of the most affordable options in the world. On top of this come accommodation costs of 50 to 80 US dollars per month and a visa plus registration at 500 to 600 US dollars per year. Those living privately in Tashkent should budget approximately 600 to 800 euros per month in total.
Important caveat: the only fee currently confirmed directly by a university is that of Andijan State Medical Institute. All other figures come from placement portals and vary between sources by up to 30 per cent. Have every figure confirmed in writing by the International Office before making a decision — not by an agency.
What to Look Out for at a Uzbek University
Listing in the World Directory of Medical Schools
Most state institutions and a large proportion of private ones are listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. Some of the most recently founded institutions are not — and the label “WHO approved” on placement portals does not substitute for this check. We verify for you during the initial consultation how your institution is listed there and in ANABIN.
Always Apply Directly Through the University
Tashkent State Medical University explicitly states that admission interviews may not be conducted by agencies and that the student visa must be processed through the university — not via a tourist visa. Those already enrolled should verify that their residence permit is in fact a student visa.
Recognition Is Regulated
Uzbekistan is not an EU member and thus remains a third country. This has not been a disadvantage since the reform of March 2026: from 1 November 2026, the oral knowledge examination under Section 3 of the German Medical Licensing Act (Bundesärzteordnung) applies as the standard route to a nationwide Approbation. Details are in the article Approbation and Recognition.

Where Can You Transfer from Uzbekistan?
University of East Sarajevo, Medical Faculty Foča (Bosnia and Herzegovina)
State faculty with its own university hospital, medicine and dentistry in English, listed in ANABIN, EU-compliantly accredited until 2033. 3,500 euros per academic year, intake in November, practical year optionally completed entirely at a German teaching hospital. Twelve years of schooling are sufficient for admission. To the Foča study guide.
MediCampus Europeo, Malta
EU location with English as the official language — linguistically the most straightforward option for anyone coming from an English-language programme. Campus in Il-Furjana near Valletta, Maltese MFHEA licence, clinical phase from the third year of study. Transfer from the second year of study, 14,500 euros per year with a lump-sum payment, intake in October. To the Valletta location article.
University of Niš, Faculty of Medicine (Serbia)
Large state university with its own university hospital, medicine in English, six years, 360 ECTS, degree MD. 1,500 euros per quarter, i.e. 6,000 euros per academic year. To the Niš location article.
The complete list of all NC-free options in Europe is available in the study transfer article for Bulgaria.
What the Transfer Means Financially
Uzbekistan is cheaper than almost every European alternative at 2,500 to 4,500 US dollars per academic year — Foča at 3,500 euros is in a comparable range, Niš at 6,000 euros is above it. The benefit here lies not in price but in the degree and the path to it: a European-accredited programme, an English-language clinical environment, and a journey home of a few hours rather than a full travel day. Our placement fee is success-based: if no study place is found, you incur no costs.
Why You Should Seek Advice as Early as Possible
- Places are limited and are allocated in order of receipt of complete documents.
- Deadlines are running: Malta starts in October, Foča in November, Niš accepts applicants quarterly.
- Documents from Central Asia require lead time. Transcripts, certified translations, and apostilles take longer than within the EU — for the institutions merged in 2025, clarifying legal succession adds further time.
Reviewing your documents takes a few days and costs nothing. Book a free study consultation — by phone or video call, together with your parents if you wish.
The author's view
Uzbekistan has restructured its higher education system within just a few years, and that deserves respect: the state institutions in Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara, and Andijan have substance and a long history.
What makes me cautious is the speed at which new private universities are being founded. Some of them have not yet seen a single cohort through to graduation — and anyone who starts in 2026 will only find out in 2032 how their degree is treated in Germany. That is an uncertainty no one needs to take on.
My advice to anyone already studying there: check early how your institution is listed in the World Directory and in ANABIN. If the result is not clear-cut, a transfer to Europe is not a step backwards — it is the fastest route to the goal.
Summary
- Uzbekistan has around 30 universities with English-language medicine programmes — study transfers are possible from all of them.
- Since 1 September 2025, Tashkent Medical Academy, Pediatric Medical Institute, and State Dental Institute have merged into Tashkent State Medical University.
- Tuition fees range from approximately 2,500 to 4,500 US dollars per academic year — affordable, but outside the EU.
- Completed courses are creditable; we convert credits to ECTS and resolve the legal succession of the merged institutions.
- Initial consultation and document review are free; the fee is success-based.
The decisive question is where you want to work later — and how early you get in touch.

Frequently Asked Questions About Study Transfers from Uzbekistan
From which Uzbek universities do you arrange transfers?
From all state and private institutions with English-language medicine programmes — including Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara, Andijan, Fergana, Urgench, Termez, Nukus, and the private universities in Tashkent, Fergana, Bukhara, Samarkand, Namangan, Angren, and Khiva.
My university has had a different name since 2025 — is that a problem?
No. Tashkent Medical Academy, Tashkent Pediatric Medical Institute, and Tashkent State Dental Institute merged on 1 September 2025 into Tashkent State Medical University. We resolve the legal succession in the recognition process.
Is my Uzbek degree recognised in Germany?
Yes, via the oral knowledge examination. Uzbekistan is not an EU member and remains a third country — since the reform of November 2026, the knowledge examination under Section 3 of the German Medical Licensing Act is the standard route, followed by nationwide Approbation.
How do I know whether my university is internationally recognised?
The decisive reference is the entry in the World Directory of Medical Schools and the status in ANABIN. We check both for you during the free initial consultation.
Will my Uzbek academic credits be recognised in Europe?
Yes. We convert them to the ECTS system and compare them with the target university's curriculum. Course content and scope are the decisive factors.
Do I need to have deregistered from my Uzbek university first?
No. The transfer is planned while you are still enrolled.
Which year of study can I enter?
For Foča and Niš typically the second to fifth year, for Malta from the second year. The specific year is confirmed after your credits have been converted.
Are the tuition fees listed on placement portals accurate?
Only partly. The confirmed fee is currently only that of Andijan State Medical Institute; all other figures vary between sources by up to 30 per cent.
What does the consultation cost?
Nothing. The initial consultation and document review are free; the fee only applies upon successful placement.
