Short answer

UK citizens studying medicine in Europe in 2026: 90/180 rule, long-stay visas, residence permits, EES since April 2026, ETIAS status and GHIC cover.

A British passport is enough for a holiday in Bulgaria or the Czech Republic, but not for a six-year medical degree there. Students who will live in these countries need a national long-stay visa or a residence permit for study, because the visa-free allowance for UK citizens is 90 days in any 180.

Marina, who handles visa, residence permit and licence files at Medschool Experts, works on these files daily. The paperwork is easy to postpone while families plan tuition and flights. This guide sorts the paperwork by stay length and country, and explains what the new EU border systems change for British students.

Last reviewed: October 2026.

Can a British passport holder live in the EU without a visa?

No. Since Brexit, UK citizens are third-country nationals in the EU. They may stay in the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. A six-year degree is a long stay, and it needs a national visa or residence permit from the country of study.

The 90-day allowance counts across the whole Schengen area, so days spent in Bulgaria and the Czech Republic add up together with holidays elsewhere. Bosnia and Herzegovina is not in the Schengen area and keeps its own rules, which we cover below.

What do the new EU border systems change for UK students?

The Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational since 10 April 2026, after a phased start on 12 October 2025. It registers travel document details, the date, time and place of each entry and exit, a facial image and, except for children under 12, fingerprints. Holders of long-stay visas or residence permits are not registered in it. That is a practical reason to hold the right permit rather than a stack of short stays.

ETIAS is a separate authorisation for visa-free travellers, with a fee of 20 euros and a validity of three years or until the passport expires. As of late October 2026 it has not launched and no applications are being collected. The European Commission planned a start in the last quarter of 2026 and says it will announce the date months ahead. Sites that sell ETIAS applications today are not official.

What does each study country require from British students?

Every study country asks for a long-stay route, and the details differ. Bulgaria uses a national long-stay visa (type D) applied for at a Bulgarian consulate, followed by a residence permit if the stay is longer than the visa. Bosnia and Herzegovina asks British students for a visa or temporary residence for study and for police registration within 24 hours of arrival. The Czech Republic issues a long-term visa or residence permit for study purposes.

Documents are similar everywhere: a valid passport, the admission letter, proof of accommodation, proof of funds and health insurance. Processing times and the exact list change, so we confirm them with the consulate for each intake.

Bulgaria (Pleven)In SchengenNational long-stay visa (D), then residence permit if the stay is longerPassport, admission letter, funds, accommodation, health insurance
Czech Republic (Brno)In SchengenLong-term visa or residence permit for studyPassport, admission letter, funds, accommodation, insurance
Bosnia and Herzegovina (Foča)Outside SchengenVisa or temporary residence for study; police registration within 24 hoursPassport, admission letter, funds, accommodation, insurance

The table is a planning aid, not legal advice. Fees and processing times change, so we check them for each applicant against the embassy's current instructions.

Does a GHIC cover a UK student studying in the EU?

Yes, for necessary state-provided healthcare. The NHS Business Services Authority states that a GHIC covers UK students studying in the EU, including the country of study, but not Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway. It is not a substitute for travel insurance and never covers repatriation.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is different. It has no reciprocal healthcare agreement with the UK, the GHIC does not cover it, and students there need appropriate health insurance from a Bosnian or international provider. For long-stay permits, insurance is also part of the file.

What is a sensible paperwork timeline?

Start the visa or permit process as soon as the admission letter arrives, because consulates ask for it and appointments fill up before the autumn intake. Keep the passport valid beyond the study period, and renew the passport before the final years so the permit can be extended without a gap.

After arrival, register your address with the authorities within the deadline of the country. In Bosnia and Herzegovina that is 24 hours. Book permit renewals before the expiry date, because processing can take weeks.

Families planning the finances can combine this with our six-year cost comparison for UK students and the UK hub on studying medicine abroad. Questions about permits go into a free consultation.

International perspective: how other nationalities handle study permits

Treatment of foreign students differs strongly by country. In the United States, international students typically need an F-1 or J-1 visa and a school-issued form. In Australia, international students need a student visa, with mandatory health cover for the whole stay. In Germany, non-EU students apply for a national visa and then a residence permit for study at the local foreigners' office.

EU citizens avoid most of this inside the EU, because free movement lets them register as residents. That is the main practical difference to British students after Brexit: the paperwork exists, it is predictable, and it is manageable with a plan.

The author's view

Permit files usually stall on small things: an expired passport, a missing insurance document, an appointment booked too late. Treat the permit like an exam with a date, and the stress goes.

My assessment: the 90/180 rule and EES make long-stay permits the more comfortable route for a six-year degree, not only the legally required one.

Summary

  • UK citizens may stay 90 days in any 180 in the Schengen area, which does not cover a six-year degree.
  • Students need a national long-stay visa or study residence permit from the country of study.
  • EES has been fully operational since 10 April 2026 and does not register long-stay visa or residence permit holders.
  • ETIAS has not launched as of late October 2026, and it costs 20 euros once it does.
  • A GHIC covers necessary state healthcare for UK students in the EU but not in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Conclusion

The paperwork is a fixed, finite task. With the admission letter in hand, it is a matter of weeks, not months, if started early.

Frequently asked questions about British passports and EU residence for medical students

Do British citizens need a visa to study medicine in Europe?

For a full degree, yes. Visa-free stays are limited to 90 days in any 180 in the Schengen area. A six-year course requires a national long-stay visa or study residence permit from the country of study.

When does ETIAS start for UK citizens?

As of late October 2026, no date has been announced and no applications are accepted. The European Commission planned a start in the last quarter of 2026 and the fee is 20 euros.

Is EES already running?

Yes. The Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10 April 2026. Holders of long-stay visas or residence permits are not registered in it.

Does the GHIC work for students in the EU?

It covers necessary state-provided healthcare for UK students in the EU, but not in Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway, and it is not a substitute for travel insurance.

Is Bosnia and Herzegovina covered by the GHIC?

No. Bosnia and Herzegovina has no reciprocal healthcare agreement with the UK, so students need health insurance from a Bosnian or international provider.

Do I have to register after arrival?

Yes. In Bosnia and Herzegovina British citizens register their address with the police within 24 hours. Other countries have their own deadlines, which we confirm for each destination.
