Short answer
Study pharmacy in Skopje (UKIM): five-year programme, language of teaching and progression. How to transfer to a European university. Free consultation.
Study pharmacy in Skopje at UKIM: what applies in North Macedonia?
In short: The Faculty of Pharmacy of Ss. Cyril and Methodius University (UKIM) in Skopje is the institution behind the pharmacy studies in Skopje covered here. We summarise what we verified and explain when a transfer to another European university can make sense, always depending on the case.
Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, known by the abbreviation UKIM, is based in Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia. The Faculty of Pharmacy operates there and addresses both domestic and international students. If you are looking for information on how to study pharmacy in Skopje, perhaps because you are thinking of starting there or because you are already enrolled and wonder how to continue, this article is written for you.
What we verified can be summed up as follows. The programme is a five-year integrated programme (10 semesters) and does not appear as English-taught in the university's catalogue. Whatever we could not verify with certainty, we say openly in the relevant sections and do not present as fact. In those cases we recommend a written query to the Faculty's student affairs office.
Medschool Experts is not connected with UKIM and does not represent the university. We are a consultancy for study transfers: we help students who want or need to continue their studies at another European university, from our 25+ partner universities in Europe.
How is the pharmacy curriculum at UKIM structured?
In short: The programme is a five-year integrated programme (10 semesters) and does not appear as English-taught in the university's catalogue. Detailed information per semester has not been published in a form we can verify. For this reason we suggest requesting it in writing before you take any decision.
In the university's programme catalogue the Faculty of Pharmacy offers the five-year integrated first and second cycle programme (10 semesters) leading to a Master's title in Pharmacy. The Faculty also offers three-year programmes, such as Dietetics with Dietotherapy (6 semesters).
The detailed course cycle, the credits and the prerequisites per year could not be fully verified when this article was written, so we do not list them here.
If you are already enrolled, keep a copy of the curriculum for the year you entered. The reason is practical: when you ask another university to assess your courses, you need the curriculum that applied to you, not the current one. The same goes for the ECTS credits or equivalent units shown on your transcript.
In which language is pharmacy taught in Skopje?
In short: In the university's catalogue pharmacy does not appear as an English-taught programme. English versions are listed there for other faculties, not for Pharmacy. Ask the Faculty in writing which language applies to each course. Every case is assessed individually. The first consultation is free and individual.
In the university's programme catalogue pharmacy does not appear as an English-taught programme. English versions are listed there for other faculties, not for Pharmacy.
This has practical consequences. If you do not speak Macedonian, following lectures, laboratories and exams can become very difficult. If you are already enrolled, you may well have noticed that part of your material is available only in the language of the country.
In our experience, even in other programmes of the country an English title does not always mean that every course is taught in English. That is why you should always ask the student affairs office which language applies to each course.
How much does it cost to study pharmacy in Skopje?
In short: We found no published tuition amount for international students in Pharmacy. If you are thinking of starting or continuing, ask the student affairs office in writing for the exact amount, the payment method and the re-enrolment conditions before deciding. The first consultation is free and individual.
For the Pharmacy programme we found no published tuition amount for international students. Pharmacy is not included in the university's catalogue of English-taught programmes.
If you are considering this programme or have already started it, ask the student affairs office in writing for the exact amount, the form of payment and the conditions for re-enrolment.
When you compare the cost with other European universities, also take into account living costs, travel and, if you repeat years, the additional tuition. The cheapest tuition fee is not always the cheapest programme overall, especially if the length of studies ends up growing.
In our consultation we look with you at what an alternative at a European university would realistically cost. We do not give specific prices here, because they depend on the university and on your case.

Book a Free Transfer ConsultationWhich exam and progression rules apply at the Faculty of Pharmacy in Skopje?
In short: The Faculty of Pharmacy has its own rules on studies, exams and moving to the next year. We did not find the full text in a form we can verify, so we give no numbers. We recommend requesting the study regulations in writing and asking specifically about retakes and prerequisites.
For the Faculty of Pharmacy we found no published progression regulation in a form we could verify. For this reason we do not state specific limits.
The questions worth submitting in writing to the student affairs office are these:
- how many times you may sit an exam and when the exam periods open;
- which courses are prerequisites for the next year and how progression works;
- what applies when you do not complete all courses of a year and whether partial progression is allowed;
- how exams are graded, what the pass mark is and whether there is an oral or written resit;
- what applies to interrupting your studies and re-enrolling after an interruption;
- whether additional tuition is charged when you repeat a year or a course.
Ask for the answer in writing and keep it. If you later need to prove to another university what your academic status was, the written confirmation from the student affairs office is valuable.
Is there a maximum study duration in Skopje, and does the Greek ν+ rule apply?
In short: The Greek ν+ rule on maximum study duration does not apply in North Macedonia, because it concerns Greek universities. For the Faculty of Pharmacy of UKIM we found no published maximum number of years. Ask the student affairs office in writing before you decide.
This section is mainly for readers from Greece, who know the ν+ rule. It says that in Greece a degree may take at most ν plus a number of additional years, where ν is the normal length of the programme, and that deletion follows once the limit is exceeded. The rule comes from Greek law and applies only to Greek universities. It does not apply in Skopje.
For the Faculty of Pharmacy in Skopje we found no published maximum number of years in a form that can be verified. The Faculty and the university have their own rules, which apply independently of Greece. We will not tell you "there is no limit", because we cannot know that.
If you are already enrolled and have fallen behind, ask the student affairs office in writing three things: whether there is a maximum number of years of study, what applies once the limit has passed, and whether an extension or suspension of studies is possible. The written query matters: an oral answer does not help you if a dispute arises later.
If the answer is unclear or if you feel that your status is at risk, do not wait. The earlier you look at the alternatives, the more options you keep.
Why can students not or do not want to continue pharmacy studies in Skopje?
In short: The reasons students of pharmacy in Skopje give us fall into a few categories: language of teaching, staffing, practical training and progression. In our experience, the quality of teaching is lower than at comparable European universities. The first consultation is free and individual.
In our experience, the quality of teaching at universities in North Macedonia is lower than at comparable European universities. We say this as an opinion based on our conversations with students, not as an objective ranking, and without wishing to insult any institution or person.
The reasons students usually give us are:
- the language of teaching is not consistent and parts of the material are not available in English;
- lecturers are lacking for some courses, or contact time with them is limited;
- practical and clinical training is not sufficient or not organised the way they expected;
- progress stops at an obstacle course and continuing looks uncertain;
- they plan to work in another European country later and want an educational environment that prepares them better;
- personal or family reasons make the distance or the cost too heavy.
In pharmacy there is the question of laboratories: how recent the equipment is, how many hours you practise yourself and how much access you have to modern analytical methods.
For all these reasons, many students transfer every year through us to universities outside North Macedonia. The decision is always personal: we do not recommend a change to everyone and we put pressure on nobody. If your own experience is good, there is no reason to change.
How do language and staffing affect the progress of pharmacy students?
In short: When the language of teaching changes or lecturers are lacking, progress in pharmacy slows down gradually rather than overnight. A course with a low pass rate accumulates students and blocks the next year. We see this pattern often. The decision always remains yours.
Progress in an integrated programme of five or six years is not linear. Usually one or two courses per year act as a filter, and students who do not complete them fall behind by a semester or a year. When, at the same time, the language of teaching is not consistent or lecturers are few, the time you need to close the gap grows.
In our experience, the pharmacy students who contact us do not describe a single isolated problem. They describe a set of small obstacles that together make progress slow: unclear materials, difficulty finding a lecturer for questions, exams they do not know how to prepare for and uncertainty about the next step.
What we suggest is that you record the obstacles before you decide. Note which courses you have completed and which not, how many times you have sat each exam, which language each course uses and what the student affairs office has told you. With this information we can assess with you whether the most realistic road is to continue or to transfer.
A transfer is not a failure. In many cases it is a level-headed decision by a student who wants to continue under better conditions.

Is the language of teaching or the practical training holding you back?
In these cases we compare alternatives with you at 25+ partner universities in Europe. We examine your documents and tell you realistically what may be recognised. We do not promise admission or recognition of courses.
Book a Free Transfer ConsultationWhat does practical training mean for your progress in pharmacy?
In short: In pharmacy, practical training largely determines the quality of studies. In our experience, the available practice is for many students in Skopje the most limiting factor. That is why it is worth asking specifically about hours, group sizes and supervision.
In pharmacy, practical training includes laboratories in chemistry and pharmaceutical technology, laboratories in biological and pharmacological methods and placements in a pharmacy or a hospital. The quality of the laboratories and the equipment determine how much real skill you acquire.
In our experience, the available practical training, the laboratory equipment and the staffing are for some students a reason to ask for an alternative in another European country.
Anyone considering an alternative should ask the new university exactly the same things: how many hours of practice the programme includes, how many students there are per teacher, where the training takes place and which language is used. With these questions you can compare in substance and not only by tuition fee.
In our consultation we help you draw up this list of questions and use it, so that your decision rests on real information.
How does a transfer from Skopje to another European university work?
In short: A transfer of pharmacy studies from Skopje to another European university is always assessed individually. The new university decides whether and which courses are recognised and into which year you may join. We accompany you through all the steps, without promising a result.
A transfer of studies means that you continue your programme at another university, with possible recognition of part of the courses you have completed. There is no single procedure: each university has its own rules and it is the university that decides, not us.
Our job is to guide you as experts. We help you choose which universities fit your case, prepare the documents, estimate realistically what may be recognised and manage the timing. We work with 25+ partner universities in Europe.
We do not promise recognition of courses or admission. The outcome depends on the university, on the place it has available and on your details. What we can do is help you present your case in the clearest and most complete way, so that the university sees it properly.
In some cases the best solution is not the transfer of the year you are in, but a fresh start in the appropriate year. We look at that with you without pressure.
What can you do if you have lost your student status?
In short: If you have lost your student status in Skopje or have been deleted, it does not mean that all roads are closed. We check your options with you, the alternative routes at European universities and the preparation of documents. We do not promise re-admission.
Some of the pharmacy students who contact us have already lost their student status: they have been deleted, did not renew their enrolment or interrupted their studies and did not re-enrol. The situation is pressing, but there are often still options.
In these cases we offer:
- a check of your situation: what exactly happened, what the student affairs office's certificate says and which options exist within the university itself;
- an examination of alternative routes at European universities, depending on the courses you have completed;
- preparation of documents: transcript of records, course descriptions, certificates and translations;
- guidance on timing, so that you do not lose unnecessary semesters.
Nobody can promise re-admission. Admission to a new university and the recognition of courses depend on the university and on your case. What we can do is show you which options are realistic and help you follow them correctly.
If you have been deleted, start with one document: the certificate or letter stating the reason and the date of deletion. Without it, your situation is hard to assess properly. If you do not have it, ask the student affairs office of the Faculty of Pharmacy for it in writing.

Have you lost your student status?
We check your options with you, the alternative routes at European universities and the preparation of your documents. There is no promise of re-admission, but there are often still roads open. The first conversation is free.
Book a Free Transfer ConsultationHow does a transfer relate to working abroad later?
In short: If you plan to work later as a pharmacist in another European country, the choice of university matters. Directive 2005/36/EC regulates the recognition of professional qualifications. Rules differ by country and case, so get informed early. Every case is assessed individually.
Directive 2005/36/EC provides for automatic recognition of pharmacists' qualifications awarded by EU member states and listed in the relevant annex. Automatic recognition concerns qualifications awarded in EU member states. For qualifications from other countries, the recognition procedure differs from country to country and case to case, and usually an individual assessment by the competent authority is required.
If your goal is to work in Europe later, it is sensible to ask from the start, for each country that interests you, which procedure applies to the qualification you will obtain and how much time or additional requirements it involves.
Several students choose to transfer to a university in an EU member state because they want their qualification to fall directly within the scope of the Directive. Others stay in their original programme and take on the recognition procedure later. Both options are legitimate, and the right one depends on your goals.
In our consultation we help you connect the choice of university with your professional goal, without promises about the outcome of recognition in each country.
Which documents and details should you prepare before the consultation?
In short: To assess your case properly a few basic documents are needed: a transcript of records, the curriculum, a certificate of student status and your secondary school documents. They do not all have to be ready before you book the first conversation.
You do not need to have prepared everything for the free consultation. The more details you bring, however, the more specifically we can answer. Useful are:
- the transcript of records or the document showing which courses and exams you have completed;
- the curriculum for the year you entered, with course descriptions if you have them;
- the certificate of student status or, in case of deletion, the document stating the reason and date;
- your school-leaving certificate and its transcript;
- language certificates, if you have any;
- a short description of the reasons why you are considering a change.
For pharmacy it helps to have ready a record of the laboratory courses and practical hours you have completed.
If a document is missing, do not let that stop you. We will tell you the next steps and how to request it from the university.
How do you choose the right European university for pharmacy?
In short: The choice of a new university for pharmacy should not rest on tuition alone. Look at the language of teaching, practical training, staffing, length, possible recognition of courses and your professional goal. We compare the options with you. The decision always remains yours.
A good comparison rests on concrete criteria. We suggest you examine at least the following:
- the language in which each course is taught and whether the university confirms it in writing;
- practical and clinical training: hours, places, supervision;
- the length of the programme and the year into which you could be placed;
- the total cost, including living expenses;
- the environment: city, language of the country, support for international students;
- your professional goal and where you want to work later.
For pharmacy, the quality of the laboratories, the possibility of a placement in a pharmacy or hospital and the language of teaching are especially important.
No university suits everyone. That is why the consultation is individual: it starts from your situation and ends with a short list of options worth examining.

The process is simple. You book an appointment through the contact form, describe your situation to us and, if you can, send the basic documents. In the conversation we look at what is happening at your university, which options exist and what the most sensible next step would be.
The first consultation does not commit you. If you decide to go ahead with us, the cost depends on the case and is discussed before we start; we do not publish specific amounts here.
If we see that the most sensible solution for you is to continue where you are, we will tell you so.
The author's view
I started dental medicine in Sofia in 2015, at 24, and graduated in 2021. Most of my classmates were five years younger, and I often felt late. That feeling is common among students who lose a year.
I am the founder and owner of Medschool Experts and a federally recognised dentist. In my experience, students who contact us rarely lack ability. There is usually one hard year, one exam or one family story behind the block. The earlier you look at your options, the more you keep.
