Cost of Medical School Abroad vs the US
What does it really cost to become a doctor? Plug in your own numbers and compare a European MD, a Caribbean MD and the classic US route, from the day you leave high school to the day you graduate.
Why the gap is so big
Most families compare tuition per year. That misses the point. The real difference is time. In the US, medicine is a graduate degree, so you pay for four years of college before medical school even starts. In Europe you walk into medical school with your high school diploma. Six years later you are a doctor.
Those four extra years cost more than tuition. They are also four years you are not earning a physician's salary at the end of the line. That is why we show the full route in the calculator, not just the price of the medical degree itself.
What we used as defaults
Europe
Tuition of about 14,000 € per year is a realistic middle value for the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland. Bulgaria and Bosnia are cheaper at 8,000 € to 9,000 €. Living costs of around 10,000 € per year cover rent, food and travel in a typical Central European university city.
Caribbean
Caribbean schools charge considerably more per year than European ones, and most students arrive with at least part of a bachelor's degree behind them. We assume three years of college plus a pre-med and MD phase. Change the values to match the school you are looking at.
US route
Four years of college and four years of medical school, each with living costs. Public in-state schools come in lower, private schools much higher. Put in your own numbers if you already have offers.
How to pay for it
A good share of families finance a European MD with savings and federal Direct Loans, which several European medical schools accept. We walk through the options in federal student loans for foreign medical schools. If you want to see which schools fit your budget, start with medical schools abroad for US students.
FAQ: cost of medical school abroad
Is medical school abroad cheaper than in the US?
In Europe, almost always. Lower tuition plus skipping college usually cuts the total cost to a fraction of the US route.
What is the cheapest way for an American to become a doctor?
A six-year MD in Europe straight after high school, for example in Bulgaria or Bosnia at 8,000 € to 9,000 € tuition per year, followed by the USMLE and a US residency.
