Medical School in Europe for Americans

Study medicine in Europe as a US American: an English-taught six-year MD right after high school, no MCAT, tuition from about 8,000 € a year and a clear path back to a US residency. Here is everything you need to know.

In the US, the road to becoming a doctor is long. Four years of college, the MCAT, an application process where most people get rejected, then four more years of medical school. Europe does it differently. Medicine is an undergraduate degree there. You apply with your high school diploma, and six years later you're a doctor. No wonder more Americans are taking a closer look. The programs are fully in English, and the right ones keep your path to a US residency wide open.

Why Americans choose medical school in Europe

  • Start right after high school: no bachelor's degree, no MCAT, doctor about four years earlier
  • English-taught programs: the complete MD in English, with the local language taught alongside for patient contact
  • Affordable tuition: approx. 8,000 to 19,000 € per year
  • USMLE-eligible: the schools we recommend are listed with an ECFMG note for US applicants
  • Two career options: US residency after the USMLE or medical practice in the European Union

The best countries in Europe for American medical students

Czech Republic

If you asked us for one pick, this would be it. Charles University's faculties in Pilsen and Hradec Králové pair centuries of academic tradition with modern teaching hospitals. Groups are small, and both towns are very safe and easy to live in. Tuition approx. 16,000 to 17,000 € per year.

Hungary

Semmelweis in Budapest and the University of Pécs have taught medicine in English for decades. You'll meet a lot of fellow North Americans there, which makes the first months a lot easier. Tuition approx. 16,000 to 19,000 € per year.

Poland

Poland is the sweet spot on price. The Medical University of Silesia and the Academy of Silesia in Katowice run six-year English MD programs, and daily life costs noticeably less than in Prague or Budapest. Tuition approx. 12,000 to 13,000 € per year.

Bulgaria

Want the lowest price for an EU degree? Look at the Medical University of Varna, right on the Black Sea. Tuition approx. 8,000 € per year.

Bosnia and Herzegovina

Mostar is small on purpose. Only 30 students a year, and USMLE preparation is built into the six-year MD. Tuition 9,000 € per year.

Admission requirements for Americans

All you really need is a US high school diploma with solid grades in biology and chemistry. Some universities run their own entrance test in those two subjects. Others look at your transcript and talk to you in an interview. No MCAT. SAT scores help at a few schools. And as a native speaker, your diploma already proves your English. We take care of the paperwork, from the apostille to the applications to your student visa.

From Europe back to the US

During your studies you take USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK, complete clinical electives in US hospitals and become ECFMG certified. As a US citizen you apply for residency without a visa. Everything about this path is in our guides USMLE for international medical graduates and IMG residency match. For a school-by-school comparison see medical schools abroad for US students.
