Swedish students: why over 2,400 study medicine abroad, how Socialstyrelsen licenses EU-trained doctors, how CSN funding works and which countries fit.

In the 2023/2024 academic year, 2,411 Swedish students were studying Medicine abroad with Swedish student finance. Medicine is the second most common field among Swedes who complete an entire degree outside Sweden.

The reason is simple. Getting into a Swedish medical programme often requires top grades or a near-perfect result on the Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test, and the number of places is limited. Many motivated students with excellent grades still miss out, sometimes year after year.

Studying Medicine or Dentistry in another EU country is a recognised and funded alternative. Thanks to EU law, a qualifying degree leads to a Swedish licence, and CSN supports studies abroad. This guide explains why so many Swedes choose this path, how recognition by Socialstyrelsen works, which destination countries are popular and what to plan for along the way.

Why So Many Swedes Study Medicine Abroad

Swedish medical schools select students either on upper secondary grades or on the Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test (högskoleprovet). In both groups, the required scores are among the highest of all programmes. With a maximum merit value of 22.5 for grades and 2.0 for the aptitude test, even a small gap can decide whether you get a place.

For many students, this means repeated attempts, supplementary courses and years of waiting. Studying abroad replaces this uncertainty with a structured six-year programme and a clear route back to Sweden.

A Stable Trend

The number of Swedish medical students abroad has been stable at between around 2,260 and 2,410 per year over the last five years. Medicine has long been an established part of Swedish study abroad, and hospitals across Sweden employ many doctors who trained in other EU countries.

Dentistry

Dentistry in Sweden is also highly competitive, with only a few dental schools. The same EU framework makes a dental degree from another EU country a practical alternative.

How Your Degree Is Recognised in Sweden

Sweden is an EU member state, so Directive 2005/36/EC on the recognition of professional qualifications applies. It sets minimum standards for medical and dental training and lists the recognised qualifications of each member state in its Annex V.

Licence From Socialstyrelsen

To practise as a doctor in Sweden, you need a licence (legitimation) from Socialstyrelsen, the National Board of Health and Welfare. For doctors trained in the EU or EEA, Socialstyrelsen requires:

  • your diploma and a certificate of conformity confirming that it meets the requirements of Annex V of Directive 2005/36/EC,
  • proof of Swedish, Danish or Norwegian at level C1,
  • a certificate of good standing issued within the last three months,
  • a Swedish personal identity number or coordination number.

Socialstyrelsen begins processing within four weeks and decides on complete applications within three to four months.

Why the Structure of the Programme Matters

Automatic recognition works best when the degree gives full right to practise in the country of study directly after graduation. In some countries, a national internship follows the degree before full practice rights are granted, and in that case an additional period of practice can be required in Sweden. This is one of the most important points to check when choosing a programme, and it explains why some destinations have become especially popular with Swedish students.

After Your Licence

With a Swedish licence, you can apply for posts in Swedish healthcare and continue into specialist training. Your years abroad count as a fully valid medical education.

Dentistry

Dentists trained in the EU or EEA also apply to Socialstyrelsen for a licence. Qualifying dental degrees listed in Annex V are recognised on the same basis.

How CSN Finances Studies Abroad

CSN, the Swedish Board of Student Finance, provides grants and loans for full degrees abroad. For studies in other countries, you can also apply for a supplementary loan to cover tuition fees. Funding depends on the programme meeting CSN's requirements and on your study progress, so it is worth checking this early. Many Swedish students finance their entire six years abroad this way.

Which Destination Countries Suit Swedish Students?

Swedish students mostly choose EU countries where the programme structure leads directly to a Swedish licence.

Latvia

Latvia is currently the most popular destination, with 877 Swedish medical students in 2023/2024. The number of Swedes studying in Latvia has more than doubled over the past five years. Riga has become a real hub for Scandinavian students.

Lithuania

Lithuania follows the same trend, with 303 Swedish medical students and strong growth over five years. English-language programmes and a lively student culture make it attractive.

Poland

Poland has 508 Swedish medical students and offers a wide range of English-language programmes. Here, it is particularly important to understand how the programme structure translates into a Swedish licence, which we check individually for you.

Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Croatia

These countries offer long-established English-language programmes in Medicine and Dentistry with EU standards. They are good options for students looking for a different study environment.

Practical Tips for Swedish Students

Check the Route to Legitimation

The most important question is whether the degree leads directly to a Swedish licence. Choose a programme where this is clearly the case.

Keep Your Swedish Strong

Socialstyrelsen requires C1 in Swedish, Danish or Norwegian. For Swedish native speakers, this is usually easy to prove, but medical terminology in Swedish is worth practising during your studies.

Work in Sweden During Summers

Summer jobs as a healthcare assistant or, later, as an unlicensed doctor (underläkare) in Swedish hospitals give you valuable experience and contacts for your first job.

Plan Your CSN Funding Early

CSN funding requires a programme that meets its requirements and regular study progress. Plan your budget over six years before you commit.

Use the Scandinavian Network

In Riga, Kaunas and other popular cities, Scandinavian student associations make settling in much easier and help with everything from housing to exam preparation.

The Author's View

Swedish students often ask me whether a degree from abroad will be seen as second-rate at home. The answer is no. Swedish hospitals employ many doctors who trained in other EU countries, and EU law guarantees that a qualifying degree leads to a Swedish licence.

What matters most is the choice of programme. The structure of the degree determines how smooth your path to legitimation will be, and this is something we look at very carefully. When the programme fits, the return to Sweden is straightforward.

I also notice how well Swedish students adapt abroad. Many of them arrive with strong English, a practical mindset and good study habits, and they quickly find their place in international cohorts. The Scandinavian communities in cities such as Riga and Kaunas make the move even easier. By the time they return, they bring back not only a medical degree but also the experience of having built a life in another country.

If the Swedish admission system did not open its doors to you this year, the European route is waiting. Book a consultation and let us plan your path to becoming a doctor in Sweden.

Conclusion

  • In 2023/2024, 2,411 Swedish students studied Medicine abroad with Swedish student finance.
  • Directive 2005/36/EC provides automatic recognition of qualifying EU and EEA degrees, and Socialstyrelsen issues the Swedish licence.
  • Socialstyrelsen requires a certificate of conformity, C1 in a Scandinavian language and a certificate of good standing.
  • CSN provides grants and loans, including a tuition fee loan, for studies abroad.
  • Latvia, Poland and Lithuania are the most popular destinations for Swedish medical students.

Thousands of Swedish doctors have taken the European route and returned home to practise. With a well-chosen programme, you can do the same and start your career with confidence. Book your free consultation and take the first step.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a medical degree from another EU country recognised in Sweden?

Yes. Directive 2005/36/EC provides automatic recognition of medical degrees listed in its Annex V. Socialstyrelsen issues the Swedish licence on this basis.

What does Socialstyrelsen require for a licence?

Your diploma with a certificate of conformity, proof of Swedish, Danish or Norwegian at level C1, a certificate of good standing and a Swedish personal identity or coordination number.

Does CSN fund medical studies abroad?

Yes. CSN provides grants and loans for full degrees abroad and a supplementary loan for tuition fees, provided the programme meets CSN's requirements.

Which countries are most popular with Swedish medical students?

Latvia, Poland and Lithuania are the most popular destinations. Latvia and Lithuania have more than doubled their numbers of Swedish medical students in five years.

Why does the structure of the programme matter?

A degree that grants full practice rights in the country of study directly after graduation leads most smoothly to a Swedish licence. Where a national internship follows the degree, additional practice can be required.

Do I need top Swedish grades to study Medicine abroad?

No. European universities apply their own admission criteria, usually based on your grades in biology and chemistry and, depending on the programme, an entrance exam or interview. A merit value that fell just short at home is often more than enough abroad.

How long does processing of the licence take?

Socialstyrelsen begins processing within four weeks and decides on complete applications within three to four months. Preparing your documents during the final semester helps you start work soon after graduation.

Can I work in other Nordic countries with my degree?

Yes. A qualifying EU degree is recognised across the EU and EEA, including Norway, Denmark and Finland. Many Swedish doctors trained abroad keep this Nordic flexibility throughout their careers.

Is Dentistry abroad also an option for Swedish students?

Yes. Qualifying dental degrees from other EU countries are recognised on the same basis, and Socialstyrelsen issues the Swedish licence for dentists as well.

Which university abroad is right for me?

That depends on your grades, preferences and budget. Contact us and we check individually which of our 25+ partner universities fits you.

Swiss-licensed dentist, founder and owner of Medschool Experts

Marcel Kloos is the founder and owner of Medschool Experts, a placement agency for medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and pharmacy degrees abroad. Since 2021 the team has secured more than 500 study places at over 25 partner universities in Europe and worldwide.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path

Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. In Switzerland he completed the federal recognition procedure and holds a Swiss dental licence.

What Marcel does at Medschool Experts

Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. His YouTube channel on studying medicine abroad has helped thousands of applicants compare universities, costs and recognition.

Topics Marcel writes about

  • Study medicine abroad without an entrance exam: universities, costs and admission
  • Study dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy in Europe in English
  • Tuition fees and living costs at medical schools in Europe and worldwide
  • Recognition of foreign medical degrees in the EU, Switzerland, the UK and the US
  • Transferring between medical schools and returning home into a higher semester
