Which universities in Russia offer medicine in English?

This is the overview of institutions listed on international placement portals for an English-language medical programme — sorted by region. Virtually all are state institutions; private providers play no role in the English-language medical segment. A transfer from all of them is in principle possible.

Moscow

• Sechenov University (I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University) — medicine, dentistry, pharmacy; tuition fee 1,300,000 roubles per academic year, approximately 15,300 US dollars.
• Pirogov University (RNRMU) — medicine 1,200,000 roubles, dentistry 1,300,000 roubles, pharmacy 900,000 roubles per academic year.
• RUDN University (Peoples' Friendship University) — medicine and dentistry, Institute of Medicine.
• Yevdokimov University of Medicine and Dentistry (MSUMD)
• Lomonosov University, Faculty of Fundamental Medicine

Saint Petersburg and the North-West

• Pavlov University (First Saint Petersburg State Medical University) — medicine optionally in English, dentistry five years.
• Mechnikov University (North-Western State Medical University) — English-language programme 440,000 roubles per academic year, approximately 5,200 US dollars.
• Saint Petersburg State University (SPbU) — medicine fully in English.
• Saint Petersburg State Paediatric Medical University
• Northern State Medical University, Arkhangelsk

• Pacific State Medical University, Vladivostok
• Far Eastern State Medical University, Khabarovsk
• Amur State Medical Academy, Blagoveshchensk
• North-Eastern Federal University Ammosov, Yakutsk

Regarding the universities in Crimea — the Federal University of Simferopol and Sevastopol State University — no reliable statement on recognition can currently be made. They are located in a territory disputed under international law; recognition and payment routes there are particularly uncertain.

What studying in Russia costs

The range is wider than in any other country in the region — between the cheapest and most expensive university the factor is approximately six:

• Affordable regional universities (Chita, Dagestan, Kabardino-Balkaria, Ivanovo, Urals): approximately 220,000 to 320,000 roubles per academic year, around 2,600 to 3,800 US dollars.
• Mid-range (Kursk, Volgograd, Ufa, Kazan, Orenburg, Perm, Vladivostok, Tomsk): approximately 410,000 to 510,000 roubles, around 4,800 to 6,000 US dollars.
• Moscow's top universities (Sechenov, Pirogov): 900,000 to 1,300,000 roubles, approximately 10,600 to 15,300 US dollars.

Living costs in Moscow and Saint Petersburg are realistically 250 to 450 US dollars per month; in regional cities considerably less. Dormitory places are usually billed annually.

An important note: the fee information on placement portals varies enormously — for the same university you can find figures that differ by more than 50 percent. Only the universities' own information is reliable. Some portals also include the dormitory in the tuition fee, making the figures incomparable.

Why students transfer from Russia to Europe

Accreditation is decided case by case

For Russia, only one accreditation agency recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education is currently registered: the IAAR, based in Kazakhstan. The only verifiably accredited institution so far is Kazan State Medical University. For all other institutions the addition “WFME approved”, frequently seen on placement portals, cannot be confirmed. We check for you in the initial consultation how your university is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools and in ANABIN.

Predictability of travel, payment and residence

Flight connections, banking routes and residence formalities have become more cumbersome from the German-speaking world. Over four or five remaining years of study this is a factor to be taken into account soberly.

Language in the clinical phase

Even in English-language programmes, Russian becomes important in patient contact from the third year onwards — at some universities the curriculum even switches entirely at that point. Those who find that this hampers their access to clinical work will find better conditions at a university with fully English-language clinical training.

Recognition is regulated

Russia is not an EU member and therefore remains a third country. Since the March 2026 reform this is no longer a disadvantage: from 1 November 2026 the oral knowledge examination under section 3 of the Federal Medical Licensing Regulations (Bundesärzteordnung) applies as the standard route to a Germany-wide licence to practise. How we handle a transfer from Russia

You will not find a checklist of papers or a table of dates on this page, and that is deliberate. What a faculty wants to see differs from university to university and changes from one intake to the next, and no two transfers look alike — a printed list would only mislead you.

What we need to get started is your profile: where you are studying, how far you have come, and which countries you could picture yourself in. We then check individually at which university, in which country, we can place you — and where we can get you in on a timeline you can actually plan around. Because we work with the largest network of official partner universities for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine, that is usually a choice between several options rather than a single one.

For students transferring, we always look for the highest possible entry point, so that the time you have already invested counts. In many cases that means continuing in one of the final two years of the programme.

Where can you transfer to from Russia?

University of East Sarajevo, Faculty of Medicine Foča (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Our core location, for which we hold representation in the German-speaking region. State faculty with its own university hospital, medicine and dentistry in English, listed in ANABIN, EU-compliant accreditation until 2033. 3,500 euros per academic year, practical year optionally completed entirely at a German teaching hospital. University of Niš, Faculty of Medicine (Serbia)

Large state university with its own university hospital, medicine in English, 360 ECTS, MD degree. 1,500 euros per quarter, i.e. 6,000 euros per academic year — price-wise comparable to what you know from the Russian mid-range. To the Niš location article.

MediCampus Europeo, Malta

EU location with English as the official language. Campus in Il-Furjana near Valletta, Maltese MFHEA licence, 14,500 euros per year with a lump-sum payment. To the Valletta location article.

What the transfer means financially

Those studying at a regional university pay less in Russia than in Niš and approximately the same as in Foča. Those enrolled in Moscow pay a multiple of Foča's 3,500 euros at 10,600 to 15,300 US dollars per academic year. Depending on the starting point, price is therefore either a secondary or primary argument for this transfer — in both cases what matters is predictability and the path to later professional practice in Europe. Living costs in Foča and Niš are realistically 450 to 500 euros per month. Our placement fee is success-based.

Why it is worth getting in touch early

• Places in the higher years are limited. The earlier we know your profile, the more options we can put in front of you.
• A transfer prepared calmly is the shorter one. Anyone who decides under time pressure usually has fewer universities to choose from.
• You lose nothing by asking. If we cannot place you well, we say so — that is more use to you than an expensive detour.
