Founded in 1979, Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) is the oldest state university in Northern Cyprus. With around 18,000 students from over 100 countries, it is one of the largest universities in the region. The city as a place to study
Gazimağusa sits directly on the east coast of Cyprus, and students at Eastern Mediterranean University are usually only a short ride from the beach. Palm Beach begins less than three kilometres south of the city centre – broad sand, gently sloping water, reachable in minutes by car. Glapsides Beach is also in immediate reach of the city.
The climate suits it: Famagusta averages nearly 21°C annually, and the summer months of June to September reliably bring 26 to 29°C, while winters rarely get truly cold.
Ercan International Airport (ECN) is about one hour by car away. Many carriers serve the Istanbul–Ercan route multiple times daily, making connections to major international destinations easy to arrange with a short layover. Among students, Famagusta is known as quieter and more affordable than the island’s larger cities.
