The city as a place to study
Girne sits right on the water. The historic harbour with its restaurants and sailing boats forms the heart of the city, and many students live just a few minutes’ walk from the sea. Beaches like Kervansaray Beach or Escape Beach Club are often reachable on foot or by scooter, while Alagadi Turtle Beach with its nesting sea turtles lies about 16 kilometres east of the city.
The climate is Mediterranean and mild: winter days usually stay above 15°C, and summer temperatures of 30 to 35°C are normal, with an annual average of nearly 9.6 hours of sunshine per day, peaking at up to 13 hours in July.
Ercan Airport (ECN) is about 41 kilometres away, roughly 35 to 40 minutes by car. Connections via Istanbul are frequent, with many carriers serving the route daily. In the city itself, lower living costs and a very active, international student scene around the harbour add to the appeal.
