Study Medicine in Bulgaria as a UK Student: Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna or Pleven?

Study Medicine in Bulgaria as a UK Student: Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna or Pleven?

Short answer

Study medicine in Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna or Pleven as a UK student: 9,000 to 10,000 euros a year, six-year English programmes and how to choose your city.

Bulgaria is the most popular destination for UK students who want to study medicine in Europe, and the first real decision is the city. Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and Pleven all teach the six-year medicine programme in English, and all four award a European degree.

The differences are tuition, size of the city and the kind of student life you want. Pleven costs 9,000 euros a year, the other three 10,000 euros. Over six years that is a gap of 6,000 euros, which matters less than most families expect once living costs and travel are added.

This guide compares the four cities side by side so that you can shortlist two before the consultation. Last reviewed: October 2026.

Which Bulgarian city is best for a UK student of medicine?

There is no single best city. Sofia suits students who want a capital with international flights and the largest student community. Plovdiv and Varna suit students who prefer a mid-sized city with a strong student identity. Pleven suits those who want the lowest tuition and a quieter town.

All four programmes run six years in English, lead to a European medical degree and are open to UK applicants. The choice is therefore about fees, lifestyle and distance from home, not about the value of the degree.

Study medicine in Sofia

Sofia is the largest of the four and the easiest to reach from the UK. As the capital, it has the biggest international student community, which makes settling in simpler for a first-time expat. It also has the most expensive housing of the four cities.

For UK students who plan to return to the NHS, Sofia is often the default choice because the international cohort is large and the logistics are straightforward.

Study medicine in Plovdiv

Plovdiv is the second-largest city in Bulgaria and works well for students who want a compact city with everything within reach. Tuition is the same as in Sofia, living costs are usually lower, and Sofia is within reach by train or bus when you want the capital for a weekend.

Study medicine in Varna

Varna sits on the Black Sea coast. Students enjoy the beach in the warm months and a quieter city in winter. Tuition is 10,000 euros a year, and the programme runs six years in English like the others. It suits students who want a seaside setting during the years of study.

Study medicine in Pleven

Pleven has the lowest tuition of the four, 9,000 euros a year. It is a smaller town, which many families see as an advantage: lower living costs, a close-knit student group and fewer distractions. The trade-off is fewer leisure options and a longer trip from the main airports.

How do the cities compare on total cost?

Tuition over six years runs from 54,000 euros in Pleven to 60,000 euros in the other three cities. Living costs come on top and vary with the city and your lifestyle. Our six-year cost comparison for UK students shows how to add accommodation, food and travel and how the total compares with a UK degree funded by a student loan.

Will a Bulgarian degree let me work in the NHS?

Bulgaria is an EU member, and a medical degree from a Bulgarian university is a European qualification. The GMC currently accepts relevant European qualifications for registration without PLAB, as explained in our hub on studying medicine abroad from the UK. The full registration process is in our guide to GMC registration after studying medicine abroad.

How do I choose between the four cities?

Start with three questions. What is your total budget over six years? Do you want a capital, a mid-sized city or a seaside setting? How close to a major airport do you want to be? Shortlist two cities, then compare them in the consultation. Placement at our 25+ partner universities is independent of A-level grades, and the consultation is free: book a conversation with Medschool Experts.

International perspective: how other countries compare

Students from many countries choose Bulgaria for the same reasons: English-taught programmes, a European degree and lower tuition than in Western Europe. Compared with private medical schools in Western Europe or the Caribbean, where tuition per year is often far higher, the Bulgarian price level explains why the country attracts students from the UK, Scandinavia, Israel, India and many other countries.

The author's view

I studied dentistry in Sofia from 2015 and started at 24, so I know how the first weeks in a new country feel. For most UK families, I would shortlist Sofia and one smaller city, because the contrast shows what matters to the student.

My assessment: the degree is equal in all four, so choose the city where the student will be happy for six years, and treat the 6,000 euro gap in Pleven as one factor among several.

Summary

  • Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna cost 10,000 euros a year, Pleven 9,000 euros.
  • Six years of tuition: 60,000 euros, or 54,000 euros in Pleven.
  • All four teach medicine in English and award a European degree.
  • The GMC currently accepts relevant European qualifications without PLAB.
  • Choose by budget, city size and distance from home, then compare two cities in the consultation.

Conclusion

The degree is the same kind of European qualification in all four cities, so the decision is about daily life and budget. Book your free consultation with Medschool Experts and we compare your two favourite cities.
