Short answer

Study medicine in Malta as a UK student: five-year programme on Gozo, 39,500 euros a year for 2026 starters and what that means for student finance.

Malta is the one place in Europe where a UK student can study for a Queen Mary medical degree in English, close to home in culture and language. The programme runs five years, mainly on the island of Gozo in the first two years and in hospitals across Gozo and Malta after that.

It is also the most expensive route in this series. Tuition for students starting in September 2026 is 39,500 euros a year, for UK, EU and international students alike. Over five years that is 197,500 euros in tuition alone.

This guide explains what you get for that price and who Malta suits. Last reviewed: October 2026.

Can a UK student study medicine in Malta?

Yes. UK, European and overseas students can all apply to the Queen Mary medicine programme in Malta. The programme lasts five years. Teaching in years one and two takes place mainly on the Gozo campus, and from year three students train on wards and in clinics across Gozo and Malta, including the main hospital on Malta.

Can UK students use a student loan in Malta?

No. UK students who study in Malta cannot get a student loan through the Student Loans Company, so the tuition has to be funded privately. That changes the cost comparison with a UK degree considerably, and it is the first point to settle before you apply.

Our six-year cost comparison for UK students shows how to compare options that are funded by a loan with options that are not.

How does Malta compare with other European options?

Malta is far more expensive than Bulgaria, where tuition runs 9,000 to 10,000 euros a year, as our guide to Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and Pleven shows. Students who choose Malta pay for a programme that is shorter by one year, taught in English throughout, and run by a UK university.

For families who can fund it, the five-year length and the familiar UK setting are the main arguments. For families who cannot, the programmes in Bulgaria, Romania and Poland offer a more affordable route.

How do I decide?

Compare Malta with two cheaper options on total cost, length and registration route, and bring the numbers to the consultation. Placement at our 25+ partner universities is independent of A-level grades. Book a free conversation with Medschool Experts.

International perspective: private medical schools in small countries

Malta belongs to a group of small countries that attract international medical students with English-language, privately funded programmes, as the Caribbean islands also do. These programmes tend to cost more than the public universities of Central and Eastern Europe, and students usually pay for the convenience of a familiar language and a short programme.

The author's view

Families look at Malta because it feels familiar: English, a UK university name, a short programme. The price is what they discover second, and it should be the first number they see.

My assessment: Malta is a good fit for families who can fund it privately. For everyone else, it makes sense to compare it with Bulgaria and Romania before applying.

Summary

  • The Queen Mary medicine programme in Malta lasts five years and is taught in English.
  • Tuition for September 2026 starters is 39,500 euros a year, 197,500 euros in total.
  • UK, EU and international students pay the same fee.
  • UK students in Malta cannot get a Student Loans Company loan.

Conclusion

Malta suits families who can fund the tuition privately and want a short English-language programme. Compare it with the cheaper options before you decide. Book your free consultation with Medschool Experts.
