Studying Veterinary Medicine in Europe as a UK Student: RCVS Registration Rules for 2026 Starters
28.10.2026
Short answer
UK students starting vet school in Europe in 2026: RCVS rules from January 2029, the Statutory Membership Exam (£2,566), English test and Iași fees.
Can a UK student register as a vet after studying veterinary medicine in Europe?
Yes. A vet who qualified in Europe can join the Register of Veterinary Surgeons kept by the RCVS. Until January 2029 the RCVS accepts qualifications from approved or accredited European schools. From January 2029 it accepts only programmes accredited directly by the RCVS, and all other graduates sit the Statutory Membership Exam before registration.
Nationality plays no role. The rules apply to British citizens, EU citizens and everyone else in the same way, because they depend on the degree and on the date of graduation. A British passport therefore does not shorten the route, and it does not lengthen it.
What does the RCVS rule from January 2029 mean in practice?
From January 2029 the RCVS accepts only qualifications from programmes it has accredited itself. A European veterinary school can apply for that accreditation, and the RCVS says it welcomes applications. A graduate of a school without it registers through the Statutory Membership Exam, the route that vets from many countries already take.
For a family choosing a university in 2026, the sensible reading is simple. Plan on the exam as the safe route, and treat any direct accreditation that a school obtains before you graduate as a bonus. Which status a specific school has at the time of graduation is a question for the consultation, because it can change during the six years.
| Date of graduation | Programme status | Route to the RCVS Register |
|---|---|---|
| Until January 2029 | Approved or accredited European school at graduation | Direct application with proof of qualification and English |
| From January 2029 | Programme accredited directly by the RCVS | Direct application |
| From January 2029 | Any other programme | Statutory Membership Exam, then registration |
How does the Statutory Membership Exam work?
The exam has two stages. The written stage is held once a year in March, with a resit opportunity in May, and consists of multiple-choice questions on clinical knowledge plus an open-book paper on the RCVS Code of Professional Conduct. It covers companion animal, production animal including veterinary public health, and equine. You must pass each area to move on to the OSCE.
The OSCE is a circuit of practical stations over the same three areas and is usually held in the autumn. Applications run between 1 October and 31 December, with payment due before 14 January. Candidates who fail an OSCE component retake only that component in the next exam period.
| Part | What it is | When | Fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Written exam | Best-of-five questions on three areas plus a professional conduct paper | Once a year in March, resit in May | £1,437 first entry, £513 per resit |
| OSCE | Practical station circuit over three areas | Usually autumn | £1,129, £513 per domain resit |
How much does registration through the exam cost?
One clean pass of both stages costs £2,566: £1,437 for the first written entry, which includes a £308 administration charge, and £1,129 for the OSCE, payable after you pass the written domains. A clinical resit costs £513 per area. Fees are listed on the RCVS page and can change, so we check them again at application time.
Next to six years of European tuition, the exam is a small item. At IULS Iași in Romania, tuition is 6,000 euros a year, paid as 3,000 euros per semester, which is 36,000 euros over six years. The exam is a one-off cost in pounds, paid after graduation.
Do European veterinary graduates need an English test for the RCVS?
Not if the degree was taught and assessed entirely in English. The RCVS asks otherwise for an IELTS Academic score of 7.0 overall and in each component, or Grade B in each component of the veterinary Occupational English Test. Even an exempt graduate must provide proof, so keep the confirmation letter from the university.
This is a practical argument for choosing a programme that runs fully in English. All four veterinary partner universities of Medschool Experts teach the complete programme in English: IULS Iași in Romania, Warsaw University of Life Sciences in Poland, the University of Forestry in Sofia in Bulgaria and LSMU in Kaunas, Lithuania. Programmes last between five and a half and six years.
How does veterinary medicine in Europe compare with a UK vet school?
The UK route has a fee cap of £9,790 a year in England in 2026/27, funded by a tuition fee loan, and a limited number of places, so many applicants with strong grades miss out. The European route has no tuition fee loan, but it has places, an English-taught programme and an exam of two stages after graduation. Tuition is paid per semester or per year.
Which one is the better fit depends on how you weigh a student loan against a start date. Students who hold an offer from a UK vet school should take it. Those without one can start a six-year programme in Europe this year, instead of waiting a year for another round of applications. Our six-year cost comparison for UK students shows how to put both options side by side.

Where can I read more about vet schools and medical schools in Europe?
More about the faculties, their programmes and their fees is on our page about studying veterinary medicine in Europe in English. For the medical route, our hub explains studying medicine abroad from the UK.
International perspective: how other countries register foreign-trained vets
Almost every country with an organised veterinary profession tests foreign-trained vets in some form. In the United States, graduates of schools outside the national accreditation system complete a certification programme and sit national licensing exams before they receive a state licence. Australia and New Zealand assess overseas veterinary degrees against a list of recognised schools, and graduates of other schools sit a national examination.
In the EU itself the position is the opposite of the UK's. A veterinary degree from one member state is recognised automatically in all the others under Directive 2005/36/EC, with no exam. That is why many European students stay in the EU after graduation. For a British graduate who wants to work in the UK, the Statutory Membership Exam is the equivalent of the national exams in the US and Australia.
The author's view
Registration rules tend to arrive as a footnote and then decide a career. The January 2029 date is the kind of detail that a family should hold in writing before paying the first semester.
I would rather tell a family that the exam is the planning route than let them discover it five years from now. The exam is a clear, scheduled step that overseas vets from many countries take every year.
My assessment: a European veterinary degree is a sound way into the profession for UK students who are shut out at home, provided they budget the exam from day one and keep the English-teaching proof.
Summary
- The RCVS accepts qualifications from approved or accredited European vet schools until January 2029.
- From January 2029 only programmes accredited directly by the RCVS are accepted, and all others sit the Statutory Membership Exam.
- Anyone who starts in autumn 2026 or later graduates after that date, so the exam is the planning route.
- One pass of both stages costs £2,566; a clinical resit costs £513 per area.
- Graduates of fully English-taught programmes are exempt from the English test but must provide proof.
- Tuition at IULS Iași is 6,000 euros a year; placement at our 25+ partner universities is independent of A-level grades.
Conclusion
The registration route for European veterinary graduates is defined and has a published date. Families who know it from the first year plan better than families who find out at graduation.
