Studying Pharmacy in Europe as a UK Student: How GPhC Registration Works
28.10.2026
Short answer
Pharmacy degree in Europe as a UK student: which GPhC route applies, what OSPAP and the 52-week training involve, the £830 fee and what to ask first.
Can a UK student register as a pharmacist after studying in Europe?
Yes, but the route depends on the qualification. The GPhC looks at the degree itself. A British passport neither shortens nor lengthens the process, and the same rules apply to every applicant with that degree.
There are two main routes. A degree listed in Annex V 5.6.2 of Directive 2005/36/EC for an EEA country uses a simplified route. Any other degree uses the internationally qualified route, which is longer and is the one to plan for unless the university confirms otherwise in writing.
| Route | Applies to | Main steps |
|---|---|---|
| Simplified EEA route | EEA qualifications listed in Annex V 5.6.2 of Directive 2005/36/EC | Application to the GPhC with proof of qualification |
| Internationally qualified route | All other qualifications | OSPAP, 52 weeks of foundation training, common registration assessment |
What is OSPAP?
OSPAP is the Overseas Pharmacists' Assessment Programme, a one-year postgraduate diploma at a UK university for pharmacists who qualified outside the UK. It is the first step of the internationally qualified route. Before enrolling, applicants obtain an eligibility letter from the GPhC. The eligibility fee is £830 and is non-refundable. The letter stays valid for two academic years.
What happens after OSPAP?
After the diploma, candidates complete 52 weeks of foundation training, allocated through the National Recruitment Scheme, and then sit the common registration assessment. After passing it and meeting the other requirements, they join the register.
The GPhC held a consultation on these arrangements that closed in July 2026. There is no firm timetable for changes, so families should check the current rules at the time of application.
How should a UK student choose a pharmacy degree in Europe?
Ask four questions in writing before paying a deposit:
- Is the degree listed in Annex V 5.6.2 of Directive 2005/36/EC?
- Is the programme taught in English, and can the university confirm it in writing?
- How many years does it take, and what is the tuition per year?
- Which route did graduates from the UK take in recent years?
If the answer to the first question is no, budget for the longer route from the first day. Our cost comparison for UK students shows how to add up a multi-year European degree against the UK alternative.
Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and veterinary: what differs?
Each profession has its own UK regulator and its own route. Doctors register with the GMC, as explained in our guide to GMC registration after studying medicine abroad. Dentists register with the GDC, covered on our page about studying dentistry abroad. Vets register with the RCVS, which we cover in our guide to veterinary medicine in Europe for UK students.

International perspective: how other countries treat foreign pharmacy degrees
Most countries require foreign-trained pharmacists to prove their qualification and then pass a local assessment. Within the EU, pharmacy degrees listed under the Directive are recognised across member states without an exam. That is the position the UK used to share and now handles through the GPhC's own routes. For UK students, the practical effect is that the choice of degree matters more than the choice of country.
The author's view
Pharmacy is the profession where families most often assume that an EU degree transfers automatically. Sometimes it does, and sometimes it does not, so the written answer from the university is worth more than any brochure.
My assessment: choose the degree by its registration route first and the city second.
Summary
- The GPhC route depends on the qualification, not on nationality.
- EEA degrees listed in Annex V 5.6.2 of Directive 2005/36/EC use a simplified route.
- All other degrees use the internationally qualified route: OSPAP, 52 weeks of foundation training and the common registration assessment.
- The OSPAP eligibility fee is £830, non-refundable, with a letter valid for two academic years.
- Ask the university in writing which group its degree belongs to before you pay a deposit.
Conclusion
A pharmacy degree from Europe can lead to UK registration, but the route differs by degree. Clarify it first and plan the budget and the timeline accordingly. Book your consultation with Medschool Experts.

He is a federally recognised dentist.
