UK-Bangladeshi Heritage: How Your EU Medical Degree Is Recognised in the UK and in Bangladesh

Bangladeshi heritage and studying medicine or dentistry in Europe: how recognition works with the GMC/GDC in the UK and the BMDC in Bangladesh.

If your family came to the UK from Sylhet or elsewhere in Bangladesh, you grew up in one of Britain's oldest and most settled migrant communities. That often means two things pull at once when you think about a career in medicine or dentistry: intense competition for the limited domestic places at UK medical schools, and a quiet sense that Bangladesh itself, or the wider connections your relatives still hold there, might one day be part of your story too.

Studying medicine or dentistry at a university in Europe is a realistic route into the profession for many British Bangladeshi students. But a European degree doesn't slot automatically into either system you might eventually want to practise in. This article lays out, plainly and without any sales pitch, how recognition actually works on both sides.

Since Brexit, a medical or dental degree earned anywhere in the European Union is treated by UK regulators the same way as a degree from India, Pakistan, the Gulf or anywhere else outside the UK. The old automatic recognition that EEA-trained doctors and dentists once enjoyed is gone. That doesn't close the door, but it does mean a defined, testable pathway stands between graduation in Europe and a licence to practise in the UK.

Why an EU Degree No Longer Walks Straight Into GMC Registration

Before 2021, a primary medical qualification from an EEA country was accepted by the General Medical Council with very little extra process, because of reciprocal EU rules. That changed with Brexit. A degree from Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Germany or anywhere else in the EU is now assessed on the same footing as a degree from outside Europe. In practice, this means most EU-trained graduates need to prove their knowledge and clinical skills through the same route the GMC uses for international medical graduates generally.

The PLAB Route Under the Medical Licensing Assessment

The GMC now runs registration around a single UK-wide standard called the Medical Licensing Assessment, or MLA. Doctors trained in the UK meet this standard through their medical school finals. Doctors trained abroad, including in the EU, meet it by sitting PLAB, the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board test.

PLAB has two parts. PLAB 1 is a written exam covering applied medical knowledge, built to the same content map as the MLA's Applied Knowledge Test. PLAB 2 is a practical, scenario-based exam where you work through simulated patient consultations, testing clinical and communication skills against the same standard as the MLA's Clinical and Professional Skills Assessment. Passing both means you've demonstrated the same competencies as a UK graduate, regardless of where your degree was earned.

Proving Your English Before You Sit PLAB

Growing up in the UK doesn't exempt you from this step if your medical training was conducted in another language. The GMC asks for evidence of English proficiency, usually through IELTS (academic) or the OET, the Occupational English Test designed specifically for healthcare professionals. Many British Bangladeshi students who study in English-medium programmes in Europe find this a formality rather than a hurdle, but it's a document you'll need regardless.

Registration Is Not the Same as a Foundation Job

Passing PLAB and meeting the other requirements gets you registered with a licence to practise, which is what allows you to legally work as a doctor in the UK. It does not automatically hand you a place on the UK Foundation Programme, the two-year training scheme most UK medical graduates enter straight after finals. Foundation Programme places are allocated through a separate, competitive application process, and PLAB graduates apply for those posts, or for other clinical jobs, alongside everyone else. Plenty of EU-trained doctors build strong NHS careers this way, but it's worth understanding that PLAB opens the door to working as a doctor, not a guaranteed training post.

The Equivalent Route for Dentistry: the Overseas Registration Exam

Dentists face a parallel system run by the General Dental Council rather than the GMC. If your dental degree isn't from a UK institution, and doesn't fall under one of the narrow list of automatically recognised qualifications, you'll need to sit the Overseas Registration Exam, known as the ORE.

How the ORE Is Structured

The ORE has two parts. Part 1 is a computer-based test of clinical knowledge and judgement. Part 2 is a practical, multi-day assessment of hands-on clinical skills, run in person. You need to pass Part 1 before you can book Part 2. Once you've passed both, you can apply to the GDC for registration, which is what allows you to practise dentistry anywhere in the UK. The GDC has been reforming how the exam is delivered to expand capacity, since demand from overseas-qualified dentists has historically outstripped the number of available sittings, so it's worth checking current waiting times when you're closer to graduating rather than assuming the timeline you read about today will still apply.

What Changes if You Hold British Citizenship Rather Than Just British Residency

None of the above depends on your passport. The GMC and GDC assess where you trained, not where you were born or which citizenship you hold. A UK-born, UK-passport-holding graduate of a European medical school faces exactly the same PLAB or ORE requirement as a cousin who grew up in Sylhet and studied at the same European university. What your UK citizenship does give you is unrestricted, permanent access to sit these exams and later work in the UK without needing any kind of visa or sponsorship, which is one less layer of paperwork than an international student from outside the UK or EU would face.

How BMDC Treats a Foreign-Earned Degree for Practice in Bangladesh

The Bangladeshi side of this story is less standardised in the information published for the public, and it genuinely does shift over time, so treat the details below as the current general shape rather than a fixed checklist.

Registration Sits With the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council

Anyone wanting to practise medicine or dentistry in Bangladesh, regardless of where they trained, needs registration with the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council, BMDC. For a graduate of a foreign university, BMDC's role is to verify that the degree and the institution meet its standards before granting registration. This typically involves the medical college being listed in international directories such as the World Directory of Medical Schools, along with verification of your specific degree certificate and transcripts through the awarding university.

Internship and Practical Requirements

As with UK-trained doctors, a period of supervised internship is generally expected before full, independent registration is granted. Whether that internship counts if it was completed abroad as part of your degree, or whether an additional period is expected in Bangladesh itself, depends on your specific qualification and on BMDC's assessment of it at the time you apply. Because Bangladesh also has its own well-established network of domestic medical colleges, BMDC's processes for foreign graduates are less heavily trodden than the UK's PLAB pathway, and requirements can be applied somewhat case by case. If Bangladesh is a genuine long-term option for you, the sensible approach is to contact BMDC directly, or speak with someone who has recently gone through the process, once you're closer to graduating, rather than planning your entire European degree around assumptions made years in advance.

Bangladeshi Citizenship Versus Dual Heritage Without It

If you hold Bangladeshi citizenship, whether solely or alongside British citizenship, you can generally apply to BMDC as a returning national. If you're a British citizen of Bangladeshi heritage without Bangladeshi citizenship yourself, registration is usually still possible as a foreign-qualified applicant, but the administrative path, and any residency or work-permit questions around actually practising in the country, may differ. This is exactly the kind of detail worth checking against your own family's documentation rather than general advice.

Two Systems, One Long-Term Advantage

None of this needs to be decided before you've even started your degree. What matters is knowing that a career built in Europe doesn't have to close off either the UK or Bangladesh later on. The pathways exist, they're well-trodden by people who came before you, and they reward preparation rather than luck.

Family circumstances, healthcare systems and personal priorities all shift over the years, sometimes in ways nobody could have predicted a decade earlier. Understanding both routes now means you keep your options genuinely open, rather than closing a door you didn't know was there. If you'd like to talk through what this could look like for your own situation, book a free individual consultation and we'll go through it together.

Swiss-licensed dentist, founder and owner of Medschool Experts

Marcel Kloos is the founder and owner of Medschool Experts, a placement agency for medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and pharmacy degrees abroad. Since 2021 the team has secured more than 500 study places at over 25 partner universities in Europe and worldwide.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path

Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. In Switzerland he completed the federal recognition procedure and holds a Swiss dental licence.

What Marcel does at Medschool Experts

Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. His YouTube channel on studying medicine abroad has helped thousands of applicants compare universities, costs and recognition.

Topics Marcel writes about

  • Study medicine abroad without an entrance exam: universities, costs and admission
  • Study dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy in Europe in English
  • Tuition fees and living costs at medical schools in Europe and worldwide
