Medicine in Europe in English: Tuition Fees Compared for UK Students (2026/27)

Short answer

Tuition fees for English-taught Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Veterinary Medicine across Europe in 2026/27, in one table, for UK students planning their budget.

Tuition fees for English-taught medical degrees in Europe range from 9,000 euros a year to almost 40,000 euros a year, and the number alone does not tell you what you are paying for. A six-year programme at 9,000 euros a year and a five-year programme at 39,500 euros a year sit at opposite ends of European medical education, with a wide field of options between them.

This guide puts the fees for our partner universities side by side, in euros, for the 2026/27 academic year. Each figure comes from the university's own published fee schedule. Last reviewed: October 2026.

What explains the gap between 9,000 and 39,500 euros?

Two things, mainly: the country's own cost of higher education, and whether the programme is run by a state university or a UK-affiliated private one. Bulgaria, Romania and Poland run state medical universities with decades of experience teaching international students, and their fees sit close to each country's domestic cost of higher education. Malta's programme is run by Queen Mary University of London, a UK university, which prices the degree closer to UK private medical education than to the Eastern European state system.

None of this says anything about teaching quality. It says where the money goes: into a long-established state system, or into a UK-branded programme delivered on a smaller island campus.

Which fee is right for your budget?

Multiply the annual fee by the programme length and you get a rough total, but tuition is only part of the picture. Our six-year cost comparison for UK students adds accommodation, food, travel and insurance, and sets the total against the cost of a UK degree funded by a student loan.

How do I choose a country within this list?

Start with the budget, then compare cities and programmes within it. Placement at our 25+ partner universities is independent of A-level grades. The consultation is free and walks through fees, start dates and the registration route for each university that fits your budget: book a conversation with Medschool Experts.

International perspective: why fees vary so much across the EU

Higher education funding differs by country even within the EU. State universities in Bulgaria and Romania charge international students close to what the state itself spends per student. Countries with higher domestic living costs, such as Poland, price programmes accordingly. Programmes run by Western universities on a second campus price closer to their home market. The fee says more about which system you are joining than about the education you receive.

The author's view

Families often start by asking which country is cheapest, and the honest answer is that the cheapest country is not always the right one. Pleven and Timișoara save you roughly 180,000 euros in tuition over six years compared with Malta, and that gap is real money that most families notice.

My assessment: decide your budget ceiling first, then compare the universities inside it on city, clinical training and your own gut feeling after speaking to current students.

Summary

  • Tuition for English-taught Medicine in Europe runs from 9,000 euros a year in Pleven and Timișoara to 39,500 euros a year in Malta.
  • Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and Burgas charge 10,000 euros a year; Brno charges 15,000 euros for Medicine and 16,000 euros for Dentistry; Warsaw charges 16,100 euros in year one and 15,900 euros a year after.
  • State universities in Bulgaria, Romania and Poland price close to their domestic cost of higher education; Malta's programme is run by a UK university and priced accordingly.
  • Tuition is only part of the total cost — add accommodation, food, travel and insurance before you compare countries.

Conclusion

The right fee is the one that fits your budget without stretching it. Book your free consultation with Medschool Experts to compare the full cost at each of our partner universities.

Frequently asked questions about Medicine tuition fees in Europe

What is the cheapest Medicine programme in this comparison?

Pleven in Bulgaria and Timișoara in Romania are the lowest at 9,000 euros a year for Medicine.

What is the most expensive?

Malta, at 39,500 euros a year for the Queen Mary programme.

Do these fees change every year?

Yes, universities set their own fees for each academic year. The figures here are for 2026/27 and are reviewed regularly.

Does a higher fee mean a better degree?

Not necessarily. Fees reflect each country's cost of higher education and, for Malta, the fact that the programme is run by a UK university. All of our partner universities award recognised European qualifications.

Are these the only costs?

No. Accommodation, food, travel and insurance come on top of tuition. Our six-year cost comparison breaks these down by country.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path

Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. He is a federally recognised dentist.

What Marcel does at Medschool Experts

Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. His YouTube channel on studying medicine abroad has helped thousands of applicants compare universities, costs and recognition.

Topics Marcel writes about

  • Study medicine abroad independent of your high school diploma grades: universities, costs and admission
  • Study dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy in Europe in English
  • Tuition fees and living costs at medical schools in Europe and worldwide
