Near East University in Nicosia

Near East University (Yakın Doğu Üniversitesi in Turkish) was founded in 1988 in the northern part of Nicosia, known in Turkish as Lefkoşa. It is the largest university in Northern Cyprus. Its Faculty of Medicine website (2026) lists 19 faculties and more than 30,000 students from 134 countries. The campus sits on the edge of the city and is reached via Near East Boulevard.

The Faculty of Medicine was founded on 20 July 2008. Clinical training takes place at Near East University Hospital on the campus, which lists 55,000 square metres, 209 patient rooms, 30 intensive care beds and eight operating theatres on its website. In January 2024 the university announced an international accreditation for the faculty, citing the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). The Faculty of Dentistry dates from 2007, and pharmacy and veterinary medicine are also taught in English.

The university is listed with YÖDAK, the higher education authority of Northern Cyprus, and with YÖK, Turkey's Council of Higher Education.

What matters in 2026: recognition

Whether a degree is accepted does not depend on how well a campus is equipped. It depends on the political status of Northern Cyprus. From our placement work in 2026 we know that North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia neither recognise degrees from Northern Cyprus nor accept transfer students from there. Morocco has frozen equivalence since May 2024. If you study at Near East University and plan to work in one of these countries, you can transfer to a recognised university in Europe, and we can guide you through it.

• Medicine: 6 years, in English or Turkish. Organ- and system-based curriculum, clinical clerkships in years four and five, internship in year six at Near East University Hospital.
• Dentistry: 5 years, in English or Turkish. Three pre-clinical and two clinical years, with patient work at the Near East Dentistry Hospital.
• Pharmacy: 5 years, in English.
• Veterinary Medicine: 5 years, in English or Turkish.

How the programmes are structured

Medicine (6 years): The curriculum is organ- and system-based. Years one to three combine basic and clinical sciences, years four and five are clinical clerkships, and year six is the internship. Clinical training takes place at Near East University Hospital on the campus. According to the academic calendar, year one of 2026/27 starts on 28 September 2026.

Dentistry (5 years): Three pre-clinical years are followed by two clinical years, with patient work at the Near East Dentistry Hospital.

Pharmacy and Veterinary Medicine (5 years each): Both programmes are taught in English.

Why we do not place students at Near East University

Tuition fees and living costs

According to Near East University's official fee list for 2026/27, English-taught medicine costs €12,600 in annual tuition, or €13,515 a year including VAT and the administrative fee. English-taught dentistry costs €12,465 a year on the same basis. The fee list excludes medicine and dentistry from its scholarship of up to 50% for international students. For pharmacy and veterinary medicine, it shows a special scholarship that brings the annual total down to €4,800.

For rent, food and transport in Nicosia, we use a guide figure of about €550 a month. Depending on how you live, it can be more or less.

Worked example: what the remaining years cost

Say you start your third year of medicine in autumn 2026. Four years remain: 4 × €13,515 = €54,060 in tuition at 2026/27 prices. Add about €26,400 for living costs (48 months × €550), and the total comes to just over €80,000. If the country where you want to work does not accept the degree, that money pays for a diploma you cannot practise with there. A transfer puts the same years into a programme with a recognised degree.

Degree recognition: the political problem

Only Turkey recognises the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) as a state. In 1983, UN Security Council Resolution 541 declared its proclamation legally invalid. No other country recognises Northern Cyprus as a state, and that affects the degrees of every university in the north, Near East University included.

• North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia: From our placement work in 2026 we know that these countries neither recognise degrees from Northern Cyprus nor accept transfer students from there. There has been no public announcement.
• Morocco: Since May 2024, on the instruction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Morocco has issued no equivalence for degrees from Northern Cyprus. Around 3,000 to 3,500 Moroccan students and graduates are affected (Morocco World News, March 2026; Yabiladi, April and July 2026). The freeze led to protests in Rabat in 2026.
• Jordan, Egypt, Iran, Iraq and the United Arab Emirates: According to a Cyprus Today report from December 2020, these countries no longer recognise higher education institutions in Northern Cyprus.
• Turkey: Near East University is listed with YÖK, and Turkey recognises its degrees.

European Union: Under Directive 2005/36/EC, medical degrees from EU member states are recognised automatically across the EU. Northern Cyprus lies outside the EU legal framework in practice, because EU law is suspended in the north, so Near East University degrees do not benefit from this rule. The Republic of Cyprus in the south is an EU member state and a different case.

The problem is not the quality of teaching. It is the political status.

Living in Nicosia (Lefkoşa)

Lefkoşa is the northern part of Nicosia and the capital of Northern Cyprus. The city is divided: the Green Line separates the Turkish Cypriot north from the south, which belongs to the Republic of Cyprus and therefore to the EU.

The climate is hot and dry. In July and August, daytime highs average around 37°C, while January nights drop to about 6°C. Most rain falls in winter, with December and January the wettest months.

The Near East University campus lies a few kilometres outside the centre and is reached via Near East Boulevard. Ercan Airport (ECN) is about 13 kilometres east of Nicosia. Flights to Ercan usually go via Turkey, most often with a connection in Istanbul.
