Study Medicine in St. Kitts and Nevis: The 2026 Island Guide
14.10.2026

Short answer
Study medicine in St. Kitts and Nevis 2026: 3 medical schools, a vet school, MD tuition from about 16,040 € a term and routes to the USA and Europe.
Can you study medicine in St. Kitts and Nevis?
Yes. In 2026, St. Kitts and Nevis hosts three MD-granting medical schools and one veterinary school. Students from the USA, Canada, Europe and the Gulf study the basic sciences on St. Kitts or Nevis, then complete clinical rotations at affiliated hospitals in North America. The MD from St. Kitts and Nevis leads to US residency and to European licensing.
The Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis is the smallest sovereign state in the Americas, and its two islands share one government, one currency (the Eastern Caribbean dollar) and English as the everyday language. For a medical student that means lectures, exams, landlords and supermarket checkouts all in English. Small country. Big medical footprint.
Medical education is one of the federation's most visible industries. Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine has trained vets on St. Kitts since 1982, the Medical University of the Americas opened on Nevis in 1998, Windsor University moved to St. Kitts in 2000, and UMHS followed in Basseterre in 2007. Four decades of student life have shaped housing, transport and services around the campuses.
Which medical schools are in St. Kitts and Nevis?
St. Kitts and Nevis has three medical schools in 2026: the University of Medicine and Health Sciences in Basseterre (founded 2007), Windsor University School of Medicine in Cayon (on St. Kitts since 2000) and the Medical University of the Americas in Charlestown, Nevis (founded 1998). Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in Basseterre trains veterinarians.
| School | Island and town | On the island since | Degree | Island phase | Clinical phase |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| University of Medicine and Health Sciences (UMHS) | St. Kitts, Basseterre | 2007 | MD, 10 semesters | Semesters 1-4 in Basseterre, semester 5 in Portland, Maine | 78 weeks in the USA |
| Medical University of the Americas (MUA) | Nevis, Charlestown | 1998 | MD, 10 terms | Terms 1-5 on Nevis | 8-week research module plus 72 weeks in the USA and Canada |
| Windsor University School of Medicine | St. Kitts, Cayon | 2000 | MD, 11 semesters | Semesters 1-5 on St. Kitts | Semesters 6-11 in the USA and Jamaica |
| Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine | St. Kitts, Basseterre | 1982 | DVM, 10 semesters | 7 pre-clinical semesters | Final clinical year at an affiliated veterinary school |
A full list of all schools across the region sits in our overview of Caribbean medical schools. St. Kitts and Nevis stands out because one small federation offers three different MD formats, from a capital-city campus to a village campus with an island-hopping ferry ride in between.
University of Medicine and Health Sciences (UMHS) in Basseterre, St. Kitts
The University of Medicine and Health Sciences is a medical school in Basseterre, the capital of St. Kitts, founded in 2007 by Dr. Robert Ross, who had earlier founded Ross University School of Medicine. UMHS students complete semesters 1-4 on St. Kitts, semester 5 in Portland, Maine, and then 78 weeks of clinical clerkships in the USA.
The Ross family still owns and runs UMHS, and Warren Ross serves as President. The school admitted its first class in May 2008 and held its first graduation in June 2012 at the United Nations building in New York. That ceremony says a lot about the self-image of the school. A strong North American focus and a campus in the island capital are the core of the UMHS profile.
The clinical block of 78 weeks splits into 48 weeks of core rotations and 30 weeks of electives at affiliated US hospitals. UMHS runs three semesters per calendar year, so new students start several times a year. The semester in Maine is a soft landing: students get used to the US hospital system before the first rotation starts.
Medical University of the Americas: the medical school on Nevis
The Medical University of the Americas (MUA) is the medical school on Nevis, located in Charlestown and founded in 1998. MUA students spend terms 1-5 on a 10-acre campus, then complete an 8-week research module and 72 weeks of clinical rotations in the USA and Canada. MUA intakes start in January, May and September.
MUA reports a 5:1 student-to-faculty ratio in the basic sciences, a campus with labs, library, fitness centre and its own test centre. For the 2024 calendar year the school reports first-attempt pass rates of 85 % on USMLE Step 1 and 96 % on Step 2 CK. The three-year residency placement rate for graduates of 2023-24 to 2025-26 stands at 93 %.
The 72 weeks of clinical medicine divide into 42 weeks of core rotations and 30 weeks of electives at teaching hospitals, clinics and medical centres. Next to the 4-year MD, MUA offers 5-year and 6-year BSc/MD tracks for school leavers. Canadians make up a large share of many MUA classes. Our university profile of Medical University of the Americas in Charlestown collects programme details and the next start dates.
Windsor University School of Medicine in Cayon, St. Kitts
Windsor University School of Medicine is a medical school in Cayon, a village on the north-east coast of St. Kitts, located at Brighton's Estate. Windsor runs an 11-semester MD: semesters 1-5 cover the basic sciences on St. Kitts, and semesters 6-11 are clinical clerkships at hospitals in the United States and Jamaica.
Windsor moved to St. Kitts in 2000 and has grown with the island since. The school also runs a 4-semester biomedical sciences programme for school leavers who need the science foundation before the MD. That makes Windsor one of the options for students coming straight from high school. Cayon is quieter than Basseterre. Students who like a village setting, sugar-cane hills and short walks to campus feel at home there.
Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine on St. Kitts
Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM) is the veterinary school on St. Kitts, based near Basseterre and founded in 1982. RUSVM students complete seven pre-clinical semesters on St. Kitts and the final clinical year at one of more than 20 affiliated veterinary schools in the USA, Canada, Australia and Ireland.
RUSVM has graduated more than 3,800 veterinarians. From September 2026, tuition for the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine is about 22,050 € (25,640 USD) per semester across all ten semesters. The campus also offers a Graduate Certificate in One Health, an MSc in One Health and research degrees with a residential component on St. Kitts. Vet students who look at the whole region find more options in our guide to studying veterinary medicine in the Caribbean.
How do clinical rotations work for St. Kitts and Nevis medical schools?
Medical schools in St. Kitts and Nevis split the MD into two phases. Students learn the basic sciences on the island for four to five semesters, then rotate through affiliated teaching hospitals in the USA and Canada for 72 to 78 weeks. Core rotations cover internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, psychiatry and family medicine.
The clinical phase is where the US career takes shape. Students meet attending physicians who later write letters of recommendation, they learn US documentation, and they sit USMLE Step 2 CK close to their rotations. Electives give room for a specialty profile. A student who aims at internal medicine can stack electives in cardiology or nephrology.
More detail on core and elective blocks, hospital networks and how students pick sites sits in our guide to Caribbean medical school clinical rotations.
What does it cost to study medicine in St. Kitts and Nevis in 2026?
For students starting in September 2026, the Medical University of the Americas on Nevis charges about 16,040 € (18,650 USD) per basic-science term and about 18,400 € (21,400 USD) per clinical term, tuition and administrative fee combined. The full 10-term MD at MUA comes to about 172,200 € (200,250 USD) before living costs.
| Item (2026) | Amount in euros | Note |
|---|---|---|
| MUA basic-science term (terms 1-5) | about 16,040 € (18,650 USD) | Tuition 13,750 USD plus administrative fee 4,900 USD |
| MUA clinical term (terms 6-10) | about 18,400 € (21,400 USD) | Tuition 16,500 USD plus administrative fee 4,900 USD |
| MUA full MD tuition and fees | about 172,200 € (200,250 USD) | 10 terms, start September 2026 |
| RUSVM veterinary semester | about 22,050 € (25,640 USD) | All 10 DVM semesters, from September 2026 |
| Living costs, single student in Basseterre | about 2,340 € (2,725 USD) a month | Including rent |
| Rent in Basseterre | about 520 € to 860 € (600 to 1,000 USD) a month | Budget to average |
| Food and groceries | about 430 € (500 USD) a month | Average |
Groceries cost more than in Europe because most food arrives by ship. Students who share a flat, cook at home and buy local fruit and fish keep their monthly budget near the lower end. Ferries and minibuses are cheap. A car is a comfort, not a must. Life on St. Kitts and Nevis as a medical student
Student life on St. Kitts and Nevis in 2026 combines study weeks with an island setting: English everywhere, a stable currency pegged to the US dollar, direct flights to North America from Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport on St. Kitts, and a ferry or six-minute water-taxi ride between the two islands.
On St. Kitts, Basseterre offers the capital-city mix of markets, cafés, banks and the Port Zante cruise pier. Frigate Bay, south of town, is where many students rent apartments near the beaches. On Nevis, Charlestown is small and walkable, and Pinney's Beach starts right outside town. Weekends belong to the beach. Or to Nevis Peak.
The 985-metre volcano dominates every view of Nevis and offers a steep rainforest hike with ropes near the summit. Students take the Brimstone Hill fortress on St. Kitts, the scenic railway and snorkelling at Cockleshell Bay as their standard study breaks. The climate stays warm all year. Hurricane season runs from June to November, and the schools plan for it with clear campus procedures.
Practical tip for the first weeks: open a local bank account early, arrange housing before arrival through the school's housing office, and keep the ferry timetable between Basseterre and Charlestown on your phone. Vance W. Amory International Airport on Nevis serves regional flights for quick connections to Antigua and St. Maarten.
St. Kitts or Nevis: which island suits which student?
St. Kitts suits medical students who want a capital-city setting with more shops, restaurants and flight connections, and it offers two MD schools to choose from. Nevis suits students who study best in a calm, compact setting with a short walk to campus. Both islands share one federation, one currency and one ferry link.
The island choice shapes four semesters of daily life. A student who needs a gym at 6 a.m., a choice of supermarkets and weekend nightlife feels at home in Basseterre or Frigate Bay. A student who wants nothing between the desk and the exam picks Nevis. Charlestown is quiet. That is the point.
The school format matters as much as the island. UMHS moves students to Maine for semester 5, which shortens the island phase. MUA keeps five terms on Nevis with a high faculty ratio. Windsor adds a pre-medical entry for school leavers. In our consultations we look at the full picture, from learning style to the planned specialty, before a school goes on the shortlist.
{{cta}}USA or Europe after a medical school in St. Kitts and Nevis?
An MD from a St. Kitts and Nevis medical school opens two routes in 2026. The US route runs through USMLE, ECFMG certification, ERAS and the NRMP Match into residency and a state licence. The European route runs through German at B2 level, the Fachsprachprüfung and the knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung) to the German Approbation.
| Step | Route USA | Route Europe (Germany) |
|---|---|---|
| Exams | USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK | Medical language exam (Fachsprachprüfung) and knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung) |
| Language | English, already the study language | German at B2 level, learnable during the MD |
| Certification | ECFMG certification | Approbation from the German state authority |
| Job entry | ERAS application and NRMP Match into residency | Application as resident physician (Assistenzarzt) at a German hospital |
| Licence | State medical licence after residency years | Full licence across Germany with the Approbation |
| Typical timing | Match in March of the final year | Language steps during the MD, knowledge test after graduation |
Many of our students keep both doors open. They learn German during the island phase, sit the B2 certificate before the clinical years and decide after Step 2 CK which route fits. Our guide to using a Caribbean medical degree in Europe explains every step, and learning German during Caribbean medical school shows a realistic weekly plan. For the US side, read how to match residency as an IMG.
A transfer is a third path. Students from St. Kitts and Nevis can move into a higher semester at an EU university. Medschool Experts is the world's leading expert for this kind of transfer and frequently achieves entry into year 4 or year 5 at top universities. The result depends on the individual file, so we check each transcript in a free consultation.
How does UHSA Antigua compare with St. Kitts and Nevis medical schools?
The University of Health Sciences Antigua (UHSA) in Piccadilly, Antigua, is the official partner of Medschool Experts in the Caribbean. UHSA charges roughly 7,300 euros a year before our partner discount, offers one clinical year in the USA and runs a four-year graduate-entry track. Antigua lies a short regional flight from St. Kitts.
Students who like the St. Kitts and Nevis model, island basics and North American clinicals, often add UHSA to their shortlist because of the price. Applying through Medschool Experts brings a substantial tuition discount. The graduate-entry track suits applicants with a prior degree or a completed year of biology, chemistry or physics. Profile and figures: UHSA on Medschool Experts and our article on University of Health Sciences Antigua.
The author's view
I started my own medical studies abroad in Sofia in 2015, at the age of 24. A late starter. What helped me most was a school that fit my way of learning, and a city where I could focus. When students ask me about St. Kitts and Nevis, I start with exactly that question, because the three medical schools there are very different places to spend your basic-science years.
Since I graduated in 2021, my team in Bern and I have placed more than 500 students at medical schools abroad. From that placement work I see one pattern clearly: students who learn German during their Caribbean years later have two careers to choose from instead of one. An MD from St. Kitts or Nevis plus a B2 certificate is a strong combination.
My advice: compare St. Kitts, Nevis and our partner UHSA in Antigua side by side, look at the total cost after the partner discount, and plan the European steps from day one. That is what we do together in the first consultation.

Your St. Kitts and Nevis MD Also Leads to Europe
An MD from St. Kitts or Nevis works far beyond North America. Graduates who want to practise in Germany add a German B2 certificate, pass the medical language exam (Fachsprachprüfung) and the knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung), and receive the Approbation. Every one of these steps is achievable, and the language steps fit into the years of study. A transfer into a higher semester at one of our 25+ partner universities in Europe is another route.
Medschool Experts plans this route with you: the choice of school, the application, the partner discount at UHSA, a German preparation plan, the European recognition steps or the transfer. Details for graduates: knowledge test in Germany for Caribbean graduates and the dual pathway USA or Europe.
