How Many Caribbean Medical Schools Are There?
There are more than 60 medical schools in the Caribbean region in 2026, counting Spanish-taught faculties in Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. Of these, 27 Caribbean medical schools teach in English for international students, with an MD built around the USMLE. St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent, St. Lucia and Barbados host three each.
The number changes slowly. New schools open, existing schools merge campuses or move. Saint James School of Medicine, for example, brought all of its teaching together in St. Vincent in 2024 and opened a new campus at Golden Vale the same year. The All Saints college in St. Vincent has continued as Richmond Gabriel University since 2022.
Does that make the count a moving target? Hardly. The 27 schools in the table above are the stable core that students from the USA, Canada and Europe actually consider. Everything else is a national faculty training doctors for its own country.
Which Islands Have Medical Schools in the Caribbean?
Medical schools in the Caribbean exist in 2026 on Grenada, Barbados, Sint Maarten, Saba, Antigua, St. Kitts, Nevis, St. Vincent, St. Lucia, Curaçao, Aruba, Grand Cayman, Dominica, Montserrat, Jamaica and Trinidad, plus Guyana on the South American mainland. The Eastern Caribbean between Antigua and Grenada has the densest cluster of English-taught schools.
Each island feels different. Grenada and Barbados are established study destinations with many international students and good flight connections to New York, Miami and Toronto. Sint Maarten and Aruba combine tourism infrastructure with a very international population. Saba, Nevis and Montserrat are small and quiet, ideal for students who want to study without distraction.
On the Dutch Caribbean islands, Curaçao and Sint Maarten use the Caribbean guilder, Aruba the florin and Saba the US dollar, and US dollars are accepted almost everywhere. The English-speaking islands of the Eastern Caribbean share the East Caribbean dollar. Students from Germany, Austria and Switzerland usually feel at home within weeks. Life is relaxed. The workload is not.
What Are the Largest Caribbean Medical Schools?
The largest Caribbean medical schools in 2026 are St. George's University in Grenada, Ross University School of Medicine in Barbados and the American University of the Caribbean in Sint Maarten. All three were founded in the 1970s, have trained tens of thousands of doctors together and run clinical rotations at teaching hospitals across the United States.
St. George's University has shaped Grenada since 1976. The True Blue campus is a small town of its own, with lecture halls, research facilities and student housing on a peninsula south of the capital. Ross University moved its medical school from Dominica to Barbados in 2019 and teaches near Bridgetown. AUC has taught in Sint Maarten since the 1990s and sends its students to clinical rotations in the US and the UK.
Size is a strength, but not the only one. Saba University School of Medicine is known for small classes, Trinity School of Medicine for its proximity to the hospital in Kingstown. A comparison of the top schools by clinical network, cost and intakes is in our Caribbean medical schools ranking 2026 and in the best Caribbean medical schools for US students.
Medical Schools in Antigua: AUA and UHSA
Antigua has two medical schools in 2026: the American University of Antigua in Coolidge and the University of Health Sciences Antigua (UHSA) in Piccadilly. UHSA is the official partner university of Medschool Experts and offers our applicants a substantial tuition discount, one clinical year in the USA and a four-year graduate-entry track.
Regular tuition at UHSA is roughly 7,300 euros a year (8,500 USD) before our partner discount. That puts UHSA among the most affordable English-taught MD programmes in the region. The four-year graduate-entry track is open to applicants with a prior degree or a completed year of biology, chemistry and physics. School leavers start with a longer track.
The American University of Antigua is the larger of the two schools, with a purpose-built campus near the airport. Both schools profit from the same island advantages: direct flights to the US and Europe, English as the everyday language and a calm, safe environment. The full picture of UHSA is in our UHSA profile and on the UHSA university page.
Which Caribbean Medical Schools Lead to a US Residency?
Caribbean medical schools lead to a US residency in 2026 when three conditions come together. The school is officially accredited by an agency recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education, it is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, and the graduate obtains ECFMG certification after passing USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK.
With ECFMG certification, a Caribbean graduate applies through ERAS and enters the NRMP Main Residency Match like any international graduate. In the 2026 Main Match, 9,682 international medical graduates matched into first-year positions out of 44,344 positions offered. US citizens who studied abroad matched at a rate of 70.0 percent, non-US citizens at 56.4 percent.
Which schools fit your own US plans is part of every consultation, because the details sit in the World Directory entries and change over time. Our overview of accredited Caribbean medical schools and the USMLE and ECFMG pathway 2026 explain the mechanics step by step.
{{cta}}Caribbean Medical Schools in the Wider Region: National Universities
Beyond the 27 English-taught schools, the wider Caribbean has national medical faculties in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Cuba in 2026. They teach mainly in Spanish, train doctors for their own health systems and complete the full list of medical schools in the Caribbean for students who speak Spanish fluently.
| Country | University | City | Programme | Profile |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Puerto Rico | University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine | San Juan | MD, bilingual Spanish and English | Part of the US medical school system, at the heart of the Puerto Rico Medical Center. |
| Puerto Rico | Ponce Health Sciences University | Ponce | MD | Health sciences university on the south coast of Puerto Rico. |
| Puerto Rico | Universidad Central del Caribe | Bayamón | MD | Private medical school in the San Juan metropolitan area. |
| Puerto Rico | San Juan Bautista School of Medicine | Caguas | MD | Community-focused school in central Puerto Rico. |
| Dominican Republic | Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE) | Santo Domingo | Doctor of Medicine, Spanish-taught | Well-known private university in the capital, popular with international students. |
| Dominican Republic | Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM) | Santiago de los Caballeros | Doctor of Medicine, Spanish-taught | Catholic university with a long medical tradition in the north. |
| Dominican Republic | Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) | Santo Domingo | Doctor of Medicine, Spanish-taught | Academic, research-oriented private institute. |
| Dominican Republic | Universidad Central del Este (UCE) | San Pedro de Macorís | Doctor of Medicine, Spanish-taught | Large medical faculty east of the capital. |
| Cuba | Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) | Havana | Doctor of Medicine, Spanish-taught | International school that has trained doctors from dozens of countries. |
How to Choose From the List of Caribbean Medical Schools
Choosing from the list of Caribbean medical schools in 2026 comes down to five questions: where the clinical rotations take place, how many intakes the school offers, what the full programme costs, whether a graduate-entry track exists and whether the degree fits a later move to the USA or Europe. Island lifestyle comes last.
Most schools start in January, May and September. That flexibility is one of the strongest arguments for the Caribbean. Nobody waits a full year. Cost differs widely, from roughly 7,300 euros a year at UHSA before our discount to considerably higher fees at the largest schools. Our breakdown of Caribbean medical school cost lists the figures school by school.
Clinical years deserve a close look. Ask where the core rotations take place, which states and which hospital types. A school with rotations in the city where you want to live later gives you a head start in the Match. MUA, UMHS and Windsor in St. Kitts and Nevis show how much the three schools of a single country can differ in this respect.
Caribbean MD: Route USA or Route Europe?
A Caribbean MD opens two directions in 2026. The US route runs through USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK, ECFMG certification and the NRMP Match. The European route, for example to Germany, runs through German at B2 level, the medical language exam (Fachsprachprüfung), the knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung) and finally the Approbation.
| Step | Route USA | Route Europe (Germany) |
|---|---|---|
| Exams during the MD | USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK | German up to B2, ideally started in year one |
| Certificate after graduation | ECFMG certification | Medical language exam (Fachsprachprüfung) |
| Final hurdle | ERAS application and NRMP Match | Knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung) |
| Licence | US state licence after residency years | Approbation, valid nationwide in Germany |
| Typical first job | Residency programme in a US hospital | Assistant doctor in specialist training |
Both routes are clearly achievable. The language steps for Germany can be prepared during the MD, so graduates do not lose time after the final exams. Many of our students keep both doors open until the clinical years. Details are in our guide to the Caribbean medical degree in Germany and the EU and in Caribbean MD: USA or Europe.
Can You Transfer From a Caribbean Medical School to Europe?
A transfer from a Caribbean medical school to a European university is possible in 2026. Medschool Experts is the world's leading expert for this kind of transfer and frequently achieves entry into year 4 or year 5 at top universities. The outcome depends on the individual file, which we review in a free consultation.
The question comes up more often than people expect. A family moves back to Europe, a partner gets a job in Vienna, or a student simply decides to finish the degree closer to home. We plan the move with the student, from the transcript analysis to the application at one of our 25+ partner universities in Europe. Our guide to the study transfer from the Caribbean to Europe shows how it works.

The author's view
I started my own medical studies abroad in Sofia in 2015, at the age of 24. A late starter, with no plan B and a lot of open questions. Nobody gave me a clean list back then. I pieced it together from forums, brochures and phone calls. That memory still shapes how our team advises every applicant today.
Since my graduation in Sofia in 2021, our team in Bern has placed 500+ students abroad, and the Caribbean has become one of the regions I recommend with real conviction. Flexible intakes, English everywhere, clinical years in the USA and a degree that also works in Europe. Where else do you get that combination?
My advice is simple. Do not choose by beach or by brochure. Choose by clinical network, by cost and by the route you want after graduation. If Antigua fits your plans, UHSA is the school I know best from our partnership. If another school fits better, I tell you that too.
Your Caribbean MD Also Leads to Europe
Every school on the list of Caribbean medical schools opens more than the US route. With German at B2 level, the medical language exam (Fachsprachprüfung) and the knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung), a Caribbean graduate can obtain the Approbation and work as a doctor in Germany. The language steps fit into the years of study, so nobody needs to start from zero after graduation.
A transfer into a higher semester at a European university is another option. We plan both directions with you, including the German preparation plan and the recognition steps. More in our guide to the Caribbean medical degree in Europe.
