Accredited Caribbean Medical Schools 2026: What Accreditation Opens in the USA and Europe

Accredited Caribbean Medical Schools 2026: What Accreditation Opens in the USA and Europe

Short answer

Accredited Caribbean medical schools in 2026: the 3 checks that open a US licence in all 50 states, the Europe route via Germany, and how to verify any school.

Accredited Caribbean medical schools are schools that an agency recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education has officially reviewed and approved, that appear in the World Directory of Medical Schools, and that carry an ECFMG Sponsor Note for your graduation year. Those three facts together open the USMLE, ECFMG certification, the residency Match and a medical licence in every US state.

The same degree also travels east. A graduate of an accredited Caribbean medical school can take the knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung) in Germany and receive the Approbation, the full German licence to practise, or transfer into a higher semester at a European university.

I started my own medical studies abroad in Sofia in 2015, at 24. The first thing my parents asked was whether the degree would count back home. Every family that calls us about the Caribbean asks the same thing in 2026. The answer below is built around the three checks we run on every school before we recommend it.

Last reviewed: October 2026.

What does accredited mean for a Caribbean medical school?

For a Caribbean medical school in 2026, accredited means an independent agency recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education has inspected the curriculum, faculty, clinical training and student support, and confirmed that the school meets international standards. The United States has required this for ECFMG certification since 2024.

Accreditation is not a ranking. It is a quality gate. A school either passes the review for a fixed period or it does not appear in the conversation at all.

The review is thorough. Inspectors visit the campus on the island, look at the affiliated teaching hospitals in the USA or the Caribbean, read graduate outcomes and interview students. The agency then grants accreditation for a set number of years and comes back. Established schools such as St. George's University in Grenada, Ross University School of Medicine in Barbados, the American University of the Caribbean in St. Maarten and the American University of Antigua have gone through this cycle many times.

For you as a future student, accreditation answers one practical question. Will the degree be accepted by the institutions that decide your career? In the USA those are ECFMG, the FSMB, the state medical boards and residency programmes. In Europe those are the state licensing authorities and the universities that accept transfer students.

Are Caribbean medical schools accredited in the USA?

Caribbean medical schools are accredited by agencies outside the USA, and that is exactly what US law expects. The USA does not accredit foreign schools itself. Instead, ECFMG recognises a Caribbean medical school when its accreditor is recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education. Graduates of these schools are licensed in all 50 US states in 2026.

This is why searches for "caribbean medical schools accredited in the US" and "us accredited caribbean medical schools" lead to the same place. A US-recognised Caribbean school is one whose graduates ECFMG certifies. Once certified, a graduate applies to residency through ERAS and the NRMP Match on the same platforms and timeline as US graduates.

The numbers from the 2026 Main Residency Match show how large this route is. The NRMP offered 44,344 training positions on Match Day, March 20, 2026, and filled 93.5 percent of them. US citizens who studied at international schools, the group most Caribbean graduates belong to, matched into first-year positions at a rate of 70 percent in 2026. Detailed school results are in our Caribbean residency match rates article.

The 3 checks that open the US licence

Three checks decide whether a Caribbean medical school opens the US licence in 2026: the school is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, its listing carries an ECFMG Sponsor Note that covers your graduation year, and the school is accredited by an agency recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education. All three take five minutes to verify online.

All three checks together open the full US pathway for a Caribbean medical graduate.

Check one is the World Directory of Medical Schools, often shortened to WDOMS. Search the school by name and country. The entry lists the official name, address, the year teaching began and the degree title.

Check two sits on the same page. Open the Sponsor Notes tab. ECFMG writes there which graduation years and which students are eligible for ECFMG certification. In 2026 ECFMG states plainly that a graduate needs this Sponsor Note covering the graduation year to apply.

Check three is the accreditation itself. Since 2024 ECFMG requires that a school is accredited by an agency recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education. The schools we work with show this on their own websites and in their Sponsor Note wording.

Which Caribbean medical schools are accredited and established?

The established accredited Caribbean medical schools in 2026 include St. George's University in Grenada, Ross University School of Medicine in Barbados, the American University of the Caribbean in St. Maarten, Saba University School of Medicine and the American University of Antigua. Each has decades of graduates practising across the USA, Canada and beyond.

These schools share a recognisable structure. Two years of basic sciences on the island, then roughly two years of clinical rotations, mostly at teaching hospitals in the USA. Students sit USMLE Step 1 after the basic sciences and Step 2 CK during the clinical years, just like US students.

UHSA Antigua: our accredited Caribbean partner school

The University of Health Sciences Antigua (UHSA) in Piccadilly, Antigua, is the official Caribbean partner of Medschool Experts in 2026. Regular tuition is roughly 7,300 euros a year (8,500 USD) before our partner discount, and students who apply through Medschool Experts receive a substantial reduction on top.

UHSA is a small school. That is its strength. Classes are compact, lecturers know every student by name, and the campus sits a short drive from St. John's. One clinical year in the USA is possible, which gives students US clinical experience and US letters of recommendation for the residency application.

UHSA also runs a four-year graduate-entry track. It is open to applicants who already hold a degree or who have completed a year of biology, chemistry and physics at university level. For a science graduate in Germany, Italy or Canada, that shortens the road to the MD considerably. Read more in our UHSA guide and the Antigua costs and structure article.

How does ECFMG certification work for accredited Caribbean graduates?

ECFMG certification is the step that turns a Caribbean MD into a US-ready qualification. In 2026 a graduate of an accredited Caribbean medical school needs the diploma from a school with a valid Sponsor Note, passes on USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK, and a satisfactory Occupational English Test Medicine result or an earlier valid communication skills pathway.

The order is simple. Step 1 after the basic sciences. Step 2 CK during the clinical years. The OET Medicine for communication. ECFMG then verifies the diploma directly with the school and issues the certificate.

With the certificate, graduates register for ERAS, apply to residency programmes in the autumn and rank them for the NRMP Match in spring. The full timeline is laid out in our USMLE and ECFMG certification pathway and the ERAS timeline for 2026. The new article on Caribbean USMLE pass rates shows how the established schools perform on the exams.

Do Caribbean graduates get a licence in all US states?

Yes. Graduates of accredited Caribbean medical schools hold full medical licences in all 50 US states in 2026. After ECFMG certification and residency training in the USA, they pass USMLE Step 3 and apply to the state medical board, exactly the path US-trained doctors follow.

Some states ask international graduates for a longer period of residency before the full licence, typically up to three years. Residency programmes last three years or longer anyway. In practice the difference disappears by the time a doctor finishes training.

Caribbean graduates practise in every speciality, from family medicine and internal medicine to surgery, anaesthesiology and psychiatry. Many of the country's rural and community hospitals depend on them.

Does it matter when the school was accredited?

For a Caribbean medical school, the year that counts is your graduation year, not your enrolment year. The ECFMG Sponsor Note lists the graduation years for which a school's graduates are eligible for ECFMG certification. A student starting in 2026 and graduating around 2030 should look at a school whose Sponsor Note is current and continuous.

Very few families ask this follow-up question. It is the one we look at first. Established schools renew their accreditation on a fixed cycle, years before it expires, so their Sponsor Notes run forward without gaps.

A second detail matters just as much. ECFMG requires at least four credit years from a school with a Sponsor Note. Students who start at one accredited school and transfer to another stay inside this framework as long as both schools carry a Sponsor Note. We check this for every student before a move.

Are accredited Caribbean medical schools recognised in Europe?

Accredited Caribbean medical schools are recognised as medical schools in Europe in 2026. Their graduates can work as doctors in Germany after the German B2 certificate, the medical language exam (Fachsprachprüfung) and the knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung), followed by the Approbation. Students can also transfer into a higher semester at a European university.

Germany is the clearest example. A Caribbean MD is a degree from outside the EU, so the licensing authority sets the knowledge test. It is an oral and practical exam on internal medicine and surgery, plus one further subject. Caribbean graduates trained on the USMLE syllabus have the clinical vocabulary and the case-based thinking this exam rewards.

The language steps fit into the studies. Students who start German in the first year on the island reach B2 by the clinical years, especially with online courses in the evenings. Our article learn German during Caribbean medical school has the plan. The complete German licensing route is in Caribbean medical degree in Europe and in the knowledge test for Caribbean graduates.

US route vs Europe route after an accredited Caribbean MD

An accredited Caribbean MD leads to two complete careers in 2026. The US route runs through USMLE, ECFMG certification, ERAS and the NRMP Match to a state licence. The Europe route runs through German B2, the medical language exam and the knowledge test to the Approbation, or through a transfer to a European university during the studies.

Choosing is not urgent. The first two years look the same on both routes. Many of our students keep both doors open until the clinical years, then decide with real exam results in hand. The article Caribbean MD: USA or Europe walks through that decision.

Can you transfer from an accredited Caribbean medical school to Europe?

Students at accredited Caribbean medical schools can transfer to a European university during their studies in 2026. Medschool Experts is the world's leading expert for this kind of transfer and frequently achieves entry into year 4 or year 5 at top universities. The outcome depends on the individual file, which we review in a free consultation.

The reasons vary. A family move. A wish to be closer to home. A decision to build a career in Europe. Whatever the reason, the Caribbean basic sciences are taught in English on the same syllabus as US schools, and that makes the transcripts easy to read for European faculties.

We place students at our 25+ partner universities in Europe. The step-by-step guide is switching from the Caribbean to Europe without losing time. Graduates who already hold a science degree should also read graduate-entry medicine in Europe and the Caribbean.

How to check if a Caribbean medical school is accredited in 2026

To check whether a Caribbean medical school is accredited in 2026, open the World Directory of Medical Schools, find the school, read the Sponsor Notes tab, and compare the graduation years with your own planned graduation. Then read the accreditation section on the school's website. The whole check takes about ten minutes.

Write the dates down. Note the school name exactly as WDOMS spells it, because several Caribbean schools have similar names. Ask the admissions office for the current accreditation period if the website does not show it. Established schools answer this within a day.

Families bring us their shortlists. My team runs exactly this check on every school before a single application goes out. Since we started, we have placed 500+ students, and the check has never been optional.

The author's view

When I began my medical studies in Sofia in 2015, I was 24 and already a late starter. I spent many evenings checking whether my future degree would be recognised in Germany and Switzerland. Today I am a federally recognised dentist and the founder of Medschool Experts, and I live in Bern. That habit of checking first has never left me.

The Caribbean schools that pass the three checks are among the most efficient routes into medicine anywhere. They teach in English on a US syllabus, start several times a year and send their students to US teaching hospitals. I like UHSA in Antigua in particular for students who want a smaller school, a fair price and a graduate-entry option.

My advice to every family: verify the WDOMS entry and the Sponsor Note together with us, then decide. If Europe is part of the plan, start German in the first semester. My team and I have placed 500+ students, and the ones who planned both routes early had the most choices at the end.

Your accredited Caribbean MD also leads to Europe

An accredited Caribbean MD is not a one-country degree. In 2026 the same diploma opens the US licence and the German Approbation. For Germany the steps are clear and achievable: German B2, the medical language exam (Fachsprachprüfung), the knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung), then the Approbation. The language steps fit into the Caribbean years.

A transfer into a higher semester at a European university is the second door. We plan both with every student, from school choice and the partner discount at UHSA to the German preparation plan, the European recognition steps or the transfer to one of our 25+ partner universities. The details are in Caribbean medical degree in Europe and Caribbean medical degree recognition in Europe.

Summary

  • Accredited Caribbean medical schools are approved by an agency recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education, a requirement for ECFMG certification since 2024.
  • Three checks open the US licence: WDOMS listing, ECFMG Sponsor Note for your graduation year, recognised accreditation.
  • Graduates of accredited Caribbean schools hold licences in all 50 US states in 2026.
  • US citizens from international schools matched at 70 percent in the 2026 NRMP Match.
  • The same degree leads to the German Approbation via B2, Fachsprachprüfung and Kenntnisprüfung.
  • Transfer into a higher semester at a European university is possible during the studies.
  • Our partner UHSA in Antigua costs roughly 7,300 euros a year before our partner discount.

Conclusion

Accreditation is the quiet foundation of every Caribbean medical career. It decides whether the USMLE, ECFMG, the Match and the state licence are open, and it is the reason European authorities accept the degree for the knowledge test and the Approbation. The established schools in Grenada, Barbados, St. Maarten, Saba and Antigua have built their reputation on exactly this.

Pick a school that passes all three checks, start German early if Europe is on your mind, and keep both routes open. If you want us to run the checks on your shortlist and plan the route with you, book a free consultation with Medschool Experts.

FAQ: Accredited Caribbean medical schools

Are Caribbean medical schools accredited?

Yes. The established Caribbean medical schools are accredited by agencies recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education. Schools such as St. George's University in Grenada, Ross University in Barbados, the American University of the Caribbean in St. Maarten and the American University of Antigua have renewed this accreditation for many years. Their graduates qualify for ECFMG certification and practise across the USA and Canada in 2026.

Which Caribbean medical schools are accredited in the USA?

The USA does not accredit foreign medical schools directly. A Caribbean medical school counts as US-recognised in 2026 when it is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, carries an ECFMG Sponsor Note for the student's graduation year, and is accredited by an agency recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education. Graduates of such schools sit the USMLE and enter the NRMP Match.

Can graduates of accredited Caribbean medical schools practise in all 50 states?

Yes. Graduates of accredited Caribbean medical schools are licensed in all 50 US states. After ECFMG certification, US residency training and USMLE Step 3, they apply to the state medical board like US graduates. Some states ask international graduates for up to three years of residency before the full licence, a period most residency programmes cover anyway.

What is an ECFMG Sponsor Note?

An ECFMG Sponsor Note is a short statement on a school's entry in the World Directory of Medical Schools. It names the graduation years for which students and graduates of that school are eligible for ECFMG certification. In 2026 a Caribbean medical graduate needs a Sponsor Note covering the graduation year to apply for ECFMG certification and, through it, US residency.

Is a Caribbean MD recognised in Germany?

Yes. A Caribbean MD from an accredited school leads to the German Approbation in 2026. Graduates need a German B2 certificate, pass the medical language exam (Fachsprachprüfung) and the knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung). German lessons can start in the first year on the island, so the language steps are often finished by graduation. After the Approbation, specialist training in Germany is open.

Can I transfer from a Caribbean medical school to a European university?

Yes. Students at accredited Caribbean medical schools transfer to European universities in 2026. Medschool Experts is the world's leading expert for this and frequently achieves entry into year 4 or year 5 at top universities. The result depends on the individual file. A free consultation with Medschool Experts clarifies which of our 25+ partner universities in Europe fit.

How much does an accredited Caribbean medical school cost?

Costs differ widely between Caribbean medical schools in 2026. Our partner, the University of Health Sciences Antigua (UHSA), charges roughly 7,300 euros a year (8,500 USD) before the Medschool Experts partner discount, which makes it one of the most affordable options. The larger schools in Grenada, Barbados and St. Maarten are priced higher. The full comparison is in our Caribbean medical school cost guide.

When do Caribbean medical schools start?

Most Caribbean medical schools offer several intakes per year, usually in January, May and September. This flexibility means a student does not need to wait a full year after finishing a degree or school. Which intake fits a specific application is best discussed in a free consultation with Medschool Experts.
