What is Ross University School of Medicine and what does it teach?

Ross University School of Medicine is a private Caribbean medical school in St. Michael, Barbados, founded in 1978 and awarding a single degree, the Doctor of Medicine. Teaching is in English throughout. The school belongs to Adtalem Global Education and reported more than 14,000 alumni practising across North America when it announced its move to Barbados in November 2018.

The school opened as the University of Dominica School of Medicine, founded by Robert Ross, and took its present name in 1984. Students matriculating in May 2022 or later follow the regular track: eleven semesters. New cohorts start three times a year, in January, in May and in September.

One degree, one destination. The curriculum is built around the United States Medical Licensing Examination, because the clinical half of the programme takes place in hospitals in the United States and most graduates apply for residency there.

Why did Ross University School of Medicine move from Dominica to Barbados?

Ross University School of Medicine moved from Dominica to Barbados because Hurricane Maria destroyed much of the infrastructure around its Portsmouth campus in September 2017. Students and faculty were evacuated, teaching continued at temporary locations through 2018, and on 19 November 2018 the school's owner, Adtalem Global Education, named Bridgetown, Barbados as the permanent site.

Maria crossed Dominica as a Category 5 storm. In October 2017 the school resumed classes aboard a chartered ferry moored off St. Kitts, and in November 2017 teaching moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, using facilities of Lincoln Memorial University. Adtalem Global Education said Barbados was chosen after "careful consideration of multiple options, including a review of academic and infrastructure requirements", with the support of the Barbadian government.

Classes began in Bridgetown in January 2019, subject to final regulatory approval from the United States Department of Education. The campus now sits at Two Mile Hill in St. Michael, Barbados. The island changed. The programme did not.

How is the MD programme at Ross University School of Medicine structured?

The Doctor of Medicine programme at Ross University School of Medicine runs over eleven semesters for students who matriculated in May 2022 or later: five semesters of Foundations of Medicine on the Barbados campus, followed by six semesters of clinical clerkships at affiliated teaching hospitals in the United States. Two phases. Two countries.

The 2025-2026 academic catalog of Ross University School of Medicine puts the medical sciences phase at 75 weeks, or 20 months, taught as an organ systems curriculum rather than as separate disciplines. The clinical phase is 90 weeks: 48 weeks of core rotations and 42 weeks of elective clerkships. Between the two sits the USMLE Step 1 examination, which students must pass before clerkships begin.

Students can request placement at a single location for the clinical years. That matters. A clerkship year in one hospital produces stronger letters of recommendation than one spread across four cities.

How long does the Ross University School of Medicine programme take, month by month?

Scheduled work at Ross University School of Medicine adds up to about 180 weeks, roughly 41 months: 75 weeks of medical sciences in Barbados, a window of up to 15 weeks for USMLE Step 1, and 90 weeks of clinical clerkships in the United States. The calendar span to graduation is closer to four years, because breaks sit between semesters.

The published academic calendar makes the rhythm concrete. For the January 2027 intake, orientation runs from 4 to 8 January 2027, classes start on 11 January, Module A ends on 2 March, Module B starts on 4 March and the last day of classes is 23 April. That is roughly 15 teaching weeks inside a four-month slot, and the school notes that start dates are subject to change.

Three intakes a year. A student who starts in September finishes on a different calendar from one who starts in January, which changes which Match cycle the final year lines up with.

Is Ross University School of Medicine accredited, and by whom?

Ross University School of Medicine is accredited by the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions, known as CAAM-HP, and has held that accreditation since 2009. CAAM-HP was established in 2003 under the Caribbean Community. Its register entry for the school, updated on 5 September 2025, records the status as accredited with conditions until the next site visit.

Accreditation is not one stamp. Four separate recognitions matter, and they sit at different levels.

The World Directory of Medical Schools is worth understanding correctly, because a listing there is often quoted as if it were an endorsement. WFME states plainly that a listing confirms the medical school exists and does not by itself denote recognition, accreditation or endorsement. The part that carries weight is the Sponsor Notes tab.

Does the 2024 ECFMG accreditation requirement affect Ross University School of Medicine graduates?

Not as Intealth currently applies the policy, and Ross University School of Medicine meets its substance in any case. The Recognized Accreditation policy was announced for 2023 and moved to 2024, a change ECFMG announced on 13 May 2020 because COVID-19 had forced many countries to suspend accreditation work. Initial implementation is a note on the Sponsor Notes tab of a school's World Directory listing.

ECFMG is explicit about what that note does. Its own guidance states: "This reporting is for information only and does not impact an individual's eligibility for ECFMG Certification." What decides eligibility is the ECFMG Sponsor Note itself, and ECFMG is equally blunt there: if no ECFMG Sponsor Note appears on the Sponsor Notes tab of a school's listing, its students and graduates are not eligible for ECFMG Certification.

The practical test is short. Open the World Directory entry, open the Sponsor Notes tab, and read whether an ECFMG Sponsor Note is present and which graduation years it covers. Behind that check sits CAAM-HP, which holds WFME recognition status through August 2032. Check the tab, not the brochure.

How much does Ross University School of Medicine cost in 2026?

Tuition at Ross University School of Medicine is USD 25,811 per semester in the Foundations of Medicine phase and USD 30,500 per semester in the clinical clerkship phase, effective September 2026. Across the eleven semesters of the regular track that comes to USD 312,055 in tuition alone, before any fee, deposit or living cost.

Two one-off amounts sit outside that table: a seat deposit of USD 1,000, and a Barbados visa fee of USD 190 for first-semester students and again at renewal.

Adding the school's own published figures across all eleven semesters produces a worked total. Tuition is USD 129,055 for the five preclinical semesters and USD 183,000 for the six clinical ones, USD 312,055 together. Administrative fees add USD 32,605 in Barbados and USD 23,010 during the clerkships. Health insurance across eleven semesters is USD 18,227. With the educational technology fee, the seat deposit and one visa fee, everything payable to the school and its insurer reaches USD 387,950.

Then come the costs the sheet budgets but does not bill: food and housing, books, transport and personal expenses. Those run USD 13,402 per preclinical semester and USD 16,413 per clinical semester, plus the examination fee in semester 7 and the residency travel in semester 9, USD 170,793 across the programme. The full budget lands at USD 558,743 before Title IV loan fees, and around USD 579,600 with them.

How does Ross University School of Medicine prepare students for USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK?

Ross University School of Medicine builds Step preparation into the curriculum rather than leaving it to the student. Students are expected to sit USMLE Step 1 within 15 weeks of completing the medical sciences curriculum, and they must pass it before clinical clerkships begin. Step 2 CK is taken during the clinical years, before graduation.

The support named by the school is specific. An eight-week Step 1 Rapid Synthesis Program reviews the topics students find hardest, and four weekly sessions work through NBME-style multiple choice questions. Students get five NBME practice examinations, two CCSSA tests and up to three CBSE examinations, plus UWorld and USMLE-Rx, with tutoring through the Clinical Academy of Teaching and Learning.

The gate comes before the wards. On results, Ross University School of Medicine publishes an 82 percent five-year cumulative first-time pass rate for USMLE Step 1, defined by the school as the number of students passing on the first attempt divided by the number of students whose first attempt fell in 2021 to 2025. For USMLE Step 2 CK the school publishes a 90 percent five-year cumulative first-time pass rate on the same 2021 to 2025 basis.

What residency outcomes does Ross University School of Medicine publish?

Ross University School of Medicine publishes a 96 percent first-time residency attainment rate for its 2025-26 graduates. The school defines that figure precisely: the percent of students attaining a 2026-27 residency position out of all graduates or expected graduates in 2025-26 who were active applicants in the 2026 NRMP match or who attained a residency position outside the NRMP match. The school adds that the rate has stayed between 96 and 98 percent since 2022.

Read the denominator. The definition counts active applicants in one match cycle, not everyone who once matriculated, and it counts positions obtained outside the National Resident Matching Program alongside those obtained through it. The school states both choices openly, and both are normal in how medical schools report match data. The figure answers how applicants who reached the match fared.

Pair it with the Step figures. A school reporting an 82 percent first-time Step 1 pass rate for 2021 to 2025 alongside a 96 percent attainment rate among 2025-26 match applicants is describing a route with a real examination filter in the middle of it.

A Doctor of Medicine from Ross University School of Medicine leads to practice in the United States through three gates in sequence: ECFMG certification, a residency position through the Match, and then a licence issued by a state medical board. The degree is the entry ticket to the first gate, not a licence in itself.
