About Final International University
Final International University (FIU) is a private university in the Kyrenia (Girne) district of Northern Cyprus. It was founded in 2015, and its campus sits on Beşparmaklar Avenue in Çatalköy, east of Kyrenia town. In 2026 FIU has nine faculties and three schools, among them a Faculty of Dentistry, a Faculty of Pharmacy and a Faculty of Health Sciences.
Dentistry is taught in Turkish and, since 2020, in English. According to the university, the programme is approved by YÖDAK, the higher education authority of Northern Cyprus, and by YÖK, the Council of Higher Education in Turkey. In August 2021 FIU opened a dental polyclinic in Ortaköy, Nicosia, which treats patients. FIU has no faculty of medicine, so you cannot study Medicine there.
Important for 2026: recognition
FIU diplomas are registered in Turkey and Northern Cyprus. Many other countries do not recognise them, because only Turkey recognises Northern Cyprus as a state. Our placement work in 2026 shows that North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia accept neither degrees from Northern Cyprus nor transfer students from there. This has nothing to do with the teaching in Kyrenia. It is a question of political status. If you plan to work outside Turkey and Northern Cyprus, a move to a recognised university in Europe is worth considering.

Study conditions and campus life abroad
Dentistry at FIU takes five years and is taught in English or Turkish. The early years focus on science and preclinical foundations, the later years on treating patients. For clinical training, the faculty has run a dental polyclinic in Ortaköy, Nicosia, since August 2021. Students who cannot yet prove sufficient English start at the university's School of Foreign Languages.
Pharmacy (MPharm) also takes five years and carries 300 ECTS. Practical training takes place in partner pharmacies and hospitals.
This structure matters if you are thinking about a transfer. The more clinical semesters you complete in Kyrenia, the more of your training is tied to a diploma many countries do not accept. Passed foundation courses are usually easier to credit while they are recent.
Admission: how to get a place to study medicine abroad

Tuition fees and cost of living
According to FIU's 2025–2026 fee list, Dentistry costs $22,200 per year at the standard rate and $11,100 with a 50% scholarship, plus $990 for registration, activity fees and VAT. At the ECB rate of 16 September 2026 (€1 = $1.1537), that is approx. €20,100 or €10,480 a year. Later years may be priced differently.
Numbeo (June 2026) puts the rent for a one-bedroom flat outside the centre at approx. €490 a month. Food, transport, flights and dental instruments come on top.
Worked example: the cost of your remaining years
Say you have finished year 2 and have three years left. With a 50% scholarship that is approx. €31,440 in tuition and fees alone, or approx. €60,300 at the standard rate, before rent and living costs. If your home country does not accept the diploma, you pay this for a degree you cannot use there. Compare both paths in euros before you decide.
Degree recognition and career prospects
Degree recognition: the political problem
Only Turkey recognises the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) as a state. UN Security Council Resolution 541 declared its proclamation in 1983 legally invalid. FIU is supervised by YÖDAK, the higher education authority of Northern Cyprus, and according to the university its Dentistry programme is also approved by YÖK in Turkey. Authorities abroad, however, do not treat YÖDAK approval like accreditation in a recognised state.
- North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia: these countries do not recognise Northern Cyprus as a state. Our placement work in 2026 shows that they accept neither degrees from Northern Cyprus nor transfer students from its universities.
- Morocco: since May 2024, equivalence for degrees from Northern Cyprus has been frozen on the instruction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, dentistry and pharmacy included. Morocco World News (March 2026) and Yabiladi (April and July 2026) report some 3,000 to 3,500 affected Moroccan students and graduates. Families protested in Rabat in 2026.
- Jordan, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, United Arab Emirates: according to Cyprus Today (December 2020), these countries no longer recognise higher education institutions in Northern Cyprus.
Degrees from EU member states, by contrast, are recognised automatically across the EU under Directive 2005/36/EC. Northern Cyprus is in practice outside the EU legal area, because EU law is suspended in the north. The Republic of Cyprus in the south is an EU member state and a separate case.
The problem is not the quality of teaching at FIU. It is the political status of Northern Cyprus.

The city as a place to study medicine
Kyrenia (Girne) lies on the north coast of Cyprus, between the sea and the Beşparmak (Kyrenia) mountains. Its historic harbour, lined with restaurants and boats, is the centre of town. The FIU campus is in Çatalköy, a few kilometres to the east. Beaches such as Alagadi, where sea turtles nest, lie further east along the same coast.
The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild, sunny winters.
The nearest airport is Ercan (ECN), about 40 minutes away by car. International flights to Ercan route via Turkey, for example via Istanbul. The area around the harbour has an international student scene.

FAQ: studying medicine abroad at this university
Is an FIU degree recognised in Bosnia, Serbia or North Macedonia?
No. Our placement work in 2026 shows that North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia do not recognise degrees from Northern Cyprus, as none of them recognises Northern Cyprus as a state. A transfer from Final International University to a university in these countries is not possible at the moment either. If you planned this route, look at other universities in Europe instead.
Is an FIU degree recognised in Morocco?
Not at the moment. Since May 2024, Morocco has frozen equivalence for degrees from Northern Cyprus on the instruction of its Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Dentistry and pharmacy are affected too. Morocco World News and Yabiladi put the number of affected Moroccan students and graduates at 3,000 to 3,500 in 2026. No end to the freeze had been announced by September 2026.
Is an FIU dentistry degree recognised in the EU?
Not automatically. Under Directive 2005/36/EC, dental degrees from EU member states are recognised automatically across the EU. Northern Cyprus is in practice outside the EU legal area, so an FIU diploma does not fall under this system and is assessed individually by the national authority in each country. That is why many students prefer to move to an EU university before they graduate.
Can I transfer from Final International University to another university?
Yes. FIU students can transfer to recognised universities in Europe in 2026. The receiving university reviews your documents and decides which courses it credits and which year you join. We have already guided dozens of students from Northern Cyprus through a transfer, and after a free review we tell you what is realistic in your case.
Will I lose time or semesters if I transfer?
Our aim is a transfer that usually costs you no time. The new university reviews your passed exams and credits them, and we frequently achieve high year placements. How much is credited depends on your grades, the content of your courses and the curriculum of the new university. The earlier you get in touch, the better we can plan your move.

Can I study Medicine at FIU?

Because its degree is not recognised in many countries. This is not about the teaching at the university. It is about the political status of Northern Cyprus, which only Turkey recognises as a state.
