The University of Zagreb School of Medicine, founded in 1917, is the oldest and largest medical school in Croatia. Alongside its Croatian-language programmes, it offers a six-year English-taught Medicine programme. Clinical training takes place at several university hospitals in Zagreb, including the University Hospital Centre Zagreb (KBC Zagreb).

Dean and professors

Prof. Marijan Klarica, MD, PhD, is Dean of the School of Medicine. The physiologist's research focuses on cerebrospinal fluid physiology and the regulation of intracranial pressure, and he has published extensively in this field.

• Prof. Davor Miječić, MD, PhD – surgeon with a research focus on surgical oncology, holding a leading role at the school.
• Prof. Vida Demarin, MD, PhD – neurologist and one of Croatia's best-known physicians, long-time head of neurology at Sestre milosrdnice University Hospital and a member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

Is the University of Zagreb School of Medicine a state-accredited university? Yes. It is Croatia's oldest and largest medical faculty and is accredited by the Croatian Agency for Science and Higher Education (Agencija za znanost i visoko obrazovanje, AZVO), the state authority for the quality assurance of Croatian higher education. The AZVO is registered with the European Quality Assurance Register for Higher Education (EQAR) and is a full member of the European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA).

The University of Zagreb, School of Medicine is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, the internationally recognised directory of medical schools maintained by WFME and FAIMER.

• Medicine: The Medicine programme leads to a medical degree. The pre-clinical phase establishes the scientific foundations; the clinical phase adds patient-facing work.

The programme lasts six years and comprises 360 ECTS credits. Years one and two focus on the pre-clinical foundations of anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology and embryology, while you also learn Croatian for later patient contact. From year three, the clinical subjects take centre stage: internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, gynaecology, neurology and psychiatry, each with placements at the affiliated university hospitals. The final year is mainly practical, comparable to a final clinical year.

The tuition fee is Medicine 12,000 EUR per year, Dentistry 5,100 EUR per semester. Before making any decision, ask the International Office to confirm the amount in writing, specifying whether accommodation, insurance, and registration fees are included.

Additional one-off costs include the application fee, visa, health insurance, travel, and usually a deposit for accommodation. Budget approx. 700 to 1,000 EUR per month for living costs.

Croatia is a member of the European Union, so the Doctor of Medicine from the University of Zagreb School of Medicine falls under Directive 2005/36/EC. The degree is automatically recognised throughout the EU/EEA and in Switzerland; no equivalence assessment or additional examination is required.

Your licence to practise is issued by the competent authority of the country where you want to work. You will usually need proof of language skills at a professional level, and processing times depend on the country.
