European University Cyprus, headquartered in Nicosia, runs a branch campus in Frankfurt am Main for its English-taught Medicine programme. The standard duration is six years, and the degree is awarded by the Cypriot university. Dean and professors

Prof. Dr. Elizabeth O. Johnson leads the School of Medicine of European University Cyprus as Dean and is also Professor of Anatomy — responsible for the entire School of Medicine, with its main campus in Nicosia and its Frankfurt campus. A specialist in neuroanatomy and neuroscience, she earned her doctorate at the University of Maryland and the National Institute of Mental Health, was Associate Professor at the University of Ioannina and is also Professor of Anatomy at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, with more than 300 scientific publications and an h-index of 40.

• Prof. Dr. Ioannis Patrikios – Deputy Dean and Professor of Biochemistry, at the faculty since 2013; developed the nutraceutical formula PLP10 for the treatment of relapsing multiple sclerosis.
• Prof. Dr. Nikolaos Zamboglou – Professor of Oncology and Radiotherapy; for around 25 years he headed the Department of Radiotherapy and Radiation Oncology at Sana Klinikum Offenbach, a teaching hospital of Goethe University Frankfurt, and was President of the German Society for Radiation Oncology (DEGRO).
• Prof. Dr. Gerhard Friehs – Professor of Neurosurgery and Director of Neuroscience, co-founder of Cyberkinetics Neurotechnology Systems and co-investigator in the pioneering BrainGate studies on brain–computer interfaces.

Accreditations of European University Cyprus, School of Medicine in Cyprus

Is European University Cyprus a state-accredited university? Yes. Graduates of the Frankfurt campus receive the same School of Medicine degree issued by European University Cyprus in Nicosia, and the programme is accredited by the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education (CYQAA), the state accreditation authority for Cypriot higher education.

European University Cyprus’ School of Medicine is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, the internationally recognised directory of medical schools maintained by WFME and FAIMER. The CYQAA itself is recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) as an accrediting agency (WFME recognition valid until February 2030) — the basis for ECFMG’s “Recognized Accreditation Policy,” under which only graduates of programmes accredited by a WFME-recognised agency are eligible for ECFMG certification and, with it, admission to the USMLE. European University Cyprus states that its School of Medicine programme has itself been reviewed and approved by ECFMG.

• Medicine: The Medicine programme leads to a medical degree. The pre-clinical phase establishes the scientific foundations; the clinical phase adds patient-facing work.

The programme lasts six years. The first two years focus on the pre-clinical phase with anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology and embryology. From the third year, the clinical phase follows with internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, gynaecology, neurology and psychiatry. Clinical training elements begin in the very first year, and teaching takes place in small, international groups. The final year is practical and works like a full clinical internship year; the university participates in Erasmus+.

The tuition fee is 12,500 EUR per semester. Before making any decision, ask the International Office to confirm the amount in writing, specifying whether accommodation, insurance, and registration fees are included.

At the Frankfurt am Main campus you study in Germany, but the Medicine degree is awarded by European University Cyprus in Nicosia. Cyprus is a member of the European Union, so the Professional Qualifications Directive 2005/36/EC applies: the degree is recognised automatically throughout the EU/EEA and in Switzerland, without an equivalence assessment or knowledge test.

You apply for your licence to practise with the competent authority of the country where you want to work. Most countries ask for proof of medical-level proficiency in their national language, and processing times vary.

After that, you can begin specialist training on the same terms as graduates of domestic medical schools. English-taught classes in small, international groups and the university's participation in Erasmus+ also make the degree a good basis for a later move to Cyprus or other EU countries.

Frankfurt has one of the milder climates in Germany. The annual average is just under 11 °C, and the Rhine-Main location brings comparatively warm summers, with July temperatures around 20 °C, and winters that less often slip into hard frost.
