The Faculty of Medicine of Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek was founded in 1979 and is one of Croatia's public medical faculties. Alongside Croatian-language programmes, it offers a six-year English-taught Medicine programme. Practical training takes place at Osijek University Hospital (KBC Osijek).

Dean and professors

Since October 2025, Prof. Dr. sc. Domagoj Drenjančević has led the faculty as Dean, elected by the faculty council for a term running until September 2028. The specialist in medical microbiology and parasitology also heads the Department of Clinical Microbiology and Hospital Infections at KBC Osijek and chairs the corresponding academic department.

Is the Faculty of Medicine of Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek a state-accredited university? Yes. It is one of Croatia's public medical faculties and is accredited by the Croatian Agency for Science and Higher Education (Agencija za znanost i visoko obrazovanje, AZVO), the state authority for the quality assurance of Croatian higher education. The AZVO is registered with the European Quality Assurance Register for Higher Education (EQAR) and is a full member of the European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA).

• Medicine: The Medicine programme leads to a medical degree. The pre-clinical phase establishes the scientific foundations; the clinical phase adds patient-facing work.

The programme lasts six years and comprises 360 ECTS. The first two years form the pre-clinical phase with anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology and embryology, accompanied by Croatian language courses for everyday life. From the third year, the clinical phase follows with internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, gynaecology, neurology and psychiatry, with placements at Osijek University Hospital. The final year is practical and works like a full clinical internship year.

The tuition fee is 8,000 EUR per semester. Before making any decision, ask the International Office to confirm the amount in writing, specifying whether accommodation, insurance, and registration fees are included.

Additional one-off costs include the application fee, visa, health insurance, travel, and usually a deposit for accommodation. Budget approx. 500 to 800 EUR per month for living costs.

The Faculty of Medicine of Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek awards a Croatian medical diploma, and Croatia is a member of the European Union. The Professional Qualifications Directive 2005/36/EC therefore applies: the degree is recognised automatically throughout the EU/EEA and in Switzerland, without an equivalence assessment or knowledge test.

You apply for your licence to practise with the competent authority of the country where you want to work. Most countries ask for proof of medical-level proficiency in their national language, and processing times vary.

After that, specialist training is open to you on the same terms as graduates of domestic medical schools — in Croatia, anywhere else in the EU or beyond.

Osijek lies on the Drava river in eastern Croatia, in the middle of the Slavonian plain, and has a temperate continental climate with distinct seasons. In July the average temperature is around 23 °C — pleasantly warm for evenings on Europska Avenija or by the river — while winters cool to around 1 °C.

Osijek Airport (OSI) is about 20 kilometres south-east of the city in Klisa. There are flights to several European destinations and non-stop domestic connections to Zagreb, Split, Zadar, Dubrovnik, Rijeka and Pula — handy for a weekend on the coast.
