Study Medicine or Dentistry in Pécs – University of Pécs

The Medical School of the University of Pécs belongs to Hungary's oldest university and offers Medicine and Dentistry in either German or English. The programme follows the Bologna structure; Medicine comprises 360 ECTS credits.

Dean and professors

Since 1 July 2026, Prof. András Komócsi, MD, PhD, has led the Medical School of the University of Pécs as Dean. The internist and interventional cardiologist was elected by the Faculty Council on 23 April 2026 with 83 of 98 votes, succeeding Prof. Miklós Nyitrai. He previously served as the university's Vice-Rector for Science and conducted research at Harvard University on advancing medical education.

• Prof. Dóra Reglődi, MD, PhD – Director of the Department of Anatomy and, since July 2026, Vice-Dean for Science; corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA) since 2022 and head of the MTA-PTE “Lendület” PACAP research group.
• Prof. Péter Than, MD, PhD – Director of the Department of Orthopaedics and, since July 2026, Vice-Dean for General Affairs; holder of the Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences title (2021) and member of the Academy's Scientific Committee for Clinical Surgery.
• Prof. Zsuzsanna Helyes, MD, PhD – pharmacologist, Vice-Rector for Science and Innovation of the University of Pécs and full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences; her research group developed the new analgesic drug candidate SV-1287, which has been in phase I clinical trials since 2026.

Accreditations of the University of Pécs in Hungary

Is the University of Pécs a state-accredited university? Yes. It is a public, state university of Hungary, accredited by the Hungarian Accreditation Committee (Magyar Akkreditációs Bizottság, MAB), the state authority for the quality assurance of Hungarian higher education.

The Medical School of the University of Pécs is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, the internationally recognised directory of medical schools maintained by WFME and FAIMER. The MAB itself is recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) as an accrediting agency (WFME recognition valid until March 2032) — the basis for ECFMG's "Recognized Accreditation Policy," under which only graduates of programmes accredited by a WFME-recognised agency are eligible for ECFMG certification and, with it, admission to the USMLE.

Hungary is also on the list of the US National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (NCFMEA), which identifies countries whose medical-education accreditation standards are comparable to those of the United States.

• Medicine: The Medicine programme leads to a medical degree. The pre-clinical phase establishes the scientific foundations; the clinical phase adds patient-facing work.
• Dentistry: Dentistry is practical from the outset: phantom courses in the pre-clinical phase, then supervised patient treatment.
• Nursing: Programme taught in English at University of Pécs, Medical School.
• Physiotherapy: Programme taught in English at University of Pécs, Medical School.

The programme lasts six years. The pre-clinical years one and two cover anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology and embryology as well as Hungarian language courses. From year three, the clinical phase follows with internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, gynaecology, neurology and psychiatry at the University of Pécs Clinical Centre. The sixth year is fully practical and works like a final clinical year.

The published tuition fee is approx. €14,520 per year for Medicine and approx. €15,040 per year for Dentistry (University of Pécs Medical School, converted from USD at the September 2026 ECB reference rate). Confirm your specific entry-year rate in writing with the International Office, as Pécs – like other Hungarian medical faculties – can set fees by admission year.

Additional one-off costs include the application fee, visa, health insurance, travel, and usually a deposit for accommodation. Budget approx. €600–800 per month for living costs.

Pécs is in Hungary and therefore in the European Union. For your degree from the University of Pécs Medical School, this means that Directive 2005/36/EC ensures automatic recognition throughout the EU/EEA and in Switzerland, without an equivalence assessment or additional examination. It makes no difference whether you choose the German- or the English-taught track, and the same rule applies to the dental degree as to the medical one.

You apply for your licence to practise with the competent authority of the country where you want to work. Proof of language skills at a professional level is usually required, and processing times differ considerably between countries.

An average daily high of 16 degrees over the year, regularly 27 to 28 degrees in midsummer and rarely below minus 2 degrees in winter: by Hungarian standards, Pécs is one of the mildest cities in the country, thanks to its sheltered location at the foot of the Mecsek Mountains.

The city of around 150,000 inhabitants is easy to explore on foot or by bike. Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) is about 200 kilometres away – roughly 2.5 to 3 hours by train or about 2 hours by car or bus – and offers numerous direct flights across Europe.
