Study Medicine or Dentistry in Niš, Serbia

The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Niš was founded in 1960 and is one of Serbia's four public medical faculties. Alongside its Serbian-language programmes, it offers accredited English-taught programmes in Medicine and Dentistry, each with 360 ECTS, as well as a three-year bachelor's programme in Nursing. The English-taught Medicine programme has 120 places per cohort, Dentistry twelve. Most practical training takes place at the University Clinical Centre Niš, the largest hospital in southern Serbia.

Dean and professors

Since October 2024, Prof. Dr. Aleksandar Mitić has led the faculty as Dean. The dentist graduated in stomatology from the faculty in Niš in 1998, was appointed professor in 2009 and previously served as Vice-Dean for Teaching in the Department of Dentistry and as Acting Director of the Dental Clinic in Niš, with numerous publications on endodontics and restorative dentistry.

• Prof. Dr. Milan Stoiljković – pharmacologist, editor-in-chief of the faculty's journal “Acta Facultatis Medicae Naissensis” and author of more than 60 papers in international journals.
• Prof. Dr. Goran Marjanović – specialist in clinical immunology and haematology, head of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology.
• Prof. Dr. Braca Kundalić – anatomist, head of the Department of Anatomy and co-editor of the practical manual and atlas of osteology (2024).

Accreditations of the University of Niš, Faculty of Medicine

Is the University of Niš, Faculty of Medicine a recognised university? Yes. It is one of Serbia's four public medical faculties and appears on the official list of Serbia's National Accreditation Body as a medical faculty with WFME recognition — the World Federation for Medical Education, which sets accreditation standards for medical education worldwide.

• Medicine: The Medicine programme leads to a medical degree. The pre-clinical phase establishes the scientific foundations; the clinical phase adds patient-facing work.
• Dentistry: Dentistry is practical from the outset: phantom courses in the pre-clinical phase, then supervised patient treatment.
• Nursing: Programme taught in English at University of Niš, Faculty of Medicine.

The programme is designed for six years, or twelve semesters. The first two years form the pre-clinical phase with anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology and embryology. From the third year, clinical subjects take centre stage, including internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, gynaecology, neurology and psychiatry, with placements at the University Clinical Centre Niš. The final year is predominantly practical and works like a full clinical internship year.

The tuition fee is 6,000 EUR per year. Before making any decision, ask the International Office to confirm the amount in writing, specifying whether accommodation, insurance, and registration fees are included.

Additional one-off costs include the application fee, visa, health insurance, travel, and usually a deposit for accommodation. Budget 400 to 600 EUR per month for living costs.

Niš lies in the Nišava valley in south-eastern Serbia and has a temperate continental climate with distinct seasons: in August the average temperature rises to around 23 °C, while in winter it hovers around freezing. The long, warm months from May to September shape life outdoors — in the cafés of Kalča, the well-known nightlife street in the historic centre, or along the banks of the Nišava.

The airport is right outside the city and bears a resonant name: Constantine the Great Airport (INI), named after the Roman emperor who was born in Niš. Air Serbia and Wizz Air offer direct flights to several European cities, so a quick trip home between semesters does not require a detour via Belgrade.
