Universidad Autónoma San Sebastián (UASS) is a private Paraguayan university created by Law No. 3185 of 2007, with its main campus in San Lorenzo near Asunción. Its medical faculty in Pedro Juan Caballero lies less than 500 metres from the Brazilian border and teaches the six-year medicine programme in person, in Spanish.

The campus has modern laboratories, climate-controlled lecture rooms and CEREM, a realistic simulation centre with surgical equipment and patient simulators. Clinical practice starts early and continues at hospitals linked to the Paraguayan Ministry of Health.

Is Universidad Autónoma San Sebastián a state-accredited university? Yes. UASS was created by Paraguayan law, and its medicine programme in Pedro Juan Caballero is authorised by CONES, the National Council of Higher Education of Paraguay (Resolution No. 06/2018). Universidad Autónoma San Sebastián holds this authorisation and awards its medical degree on this basis.

The programme runs over six years. The first semesters cover the basic sciences such as anatomy, biochemistry, microbiology and physiology, with early clinical contact and training in the CEREM simulation centre. The clinical years follow at partner hospitals of the Ministry of Health, and the programme ends with a supervised internship year in the main clinical disciplines.

UASS admits students without an entrance exam. After a short technical interview you complete the enrolment; you need your secondary school certificate with the required legalisation and, as a foreign student, a Paraguayan migration card (cédula de migración). Classes are taught in Spanish, and the teaching staff is used to students who are still building up their Spanish.

Tuition is charged in monthly instalments. In the first semester the monthly fee is approx. 205 to 220 € (R$ 1,200 to 1,300, billed in guaraníes and therefore subject to the exchange rate), with a discount for payment by the first of the month. Fees rise in the later years of the programme. At enrolment a one-time fee of approx. 255 € (R$ 1,500) applies.

Living costs in Pedro Juan Caballero are moderate; many students share flats or live in the twin city of Ponta Porã on the Brazilian side.

Graduates receive a Paraguayan medical degree. Brazilian graduates who want to practise in Brazil sit the Revalida, the national exam for the revalidation of foreign medical degrees; the UASS curriculum is designed with this exam in mind. Graduates can also apply for medical residency in Paraguay.

Pedro Juan Caballero is the capital of the Amambay department in north-eastern Paraguay and forms one urban area with Ponta Porã in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul. The border runs along a single avenue and can be crossed freely, so Portuguese is heard almost everywhere and Brazilian students find a familiar environment.

The city is known for its duty-free shopping and a large student community from Brazil. Campo Grande, the capital of Mato Grosso do Sul, is the nearest major airport on the Brazilian side.
